The BDC should be able to authenticate users; the one thing that won't work is any write access to the domain database, like password changes, group membership changes, new users, ... om/kb/1672 48
Name resolution is the main problem preventing successful authentication. Assuming the PDC is running WINS, make sure that
* the BDC is running WINS as well,
* that both DCs are replicating WINS,
* that both DCs point *only* to themselves in the WINS server list
* that all clients are using both WINS servers
In case of an extended downtime of the PDC, you might have to promote the BDC to PDC, which will obviously cause trouble once the PDC comes back online. Check here on how to resolve this:
