Question

UBCD iso fails to boot Win 2000 pro

Asked by: carolinadon

I have a win 2000 machine that won't boot; it dies after the Win logo screen. The  technician wants me to create a UBCD iso so he can remotely examine the machine. I downloaded ubcd411.zip, extracted it, and burned the iso with Nero according to the step-by-step directions. Set bios to new source. CD spins and begins using UBCD (I think) but when "starting windows progress bar" appears the machine starts hitting the hd and loads file from there... failing.   I've downloaded ubcd411 twice, burned it with several burners, tried different cd media... always with the same failure.   However Hiren's iso boot works fine.   Any ideas?

Not a server. Nor any special devices. Just a thumb drive and a network connection.

If it says starting Windows, then it isn't even loading the CD. Are you sure that you burnt the ISO to the disc as an IS not just a file.

For whatever reason your system is not seeing that disk as bootable.

Hiren's is Highly ILLEGAL and should not be recommended here ! read the EE pages !
i think your cd is not bootable
download ubcd from here ;:  http://pharry.org/data/ubcd411.iso
and burn that to a cd, using an image burner (under tools for Nero)

Is there a way to call for Boot Menu via F key hitting? When you get first screen of devices detection you are suggested to press either Del or F key to run Boot Menu.
In boot menu you will be able to select CD-ROM. Have you tried it?

Chokdii: I wondered about the starting "windows message"; Hiren's said "starting Hirens". So when ubcd boots, it will say "starting ubcd..."?

Nobus: I'm downloading ubcd411 from  pharry.org now; I cited Hirens because it downloaded, burned, and booted... proving that my burn software, burner, media, and PC is cabable of booting from a CD.

Noxcho: If there is a first screen of devices in ubcd it flashes by too fast to see or hit anything. It spins the CD, then  puts up "boot: _" in the upper left corner like a dos prompt, then flashes "booting",  and finally dispalys the "starting windows" progress bar at the bottom of the screen as it hits the hard drive.

Download finished. I burned iso using Nero. Booted... but this time
when the "boot: _ " came up, I started pounding the F keys.  And I got
a dos like UBCD menu!   Was this what I was supposed to do all along?

The menu has things like Mainboard tools, Hard disk tools...

I was told that when UBCD booted properly I would see a gui windows
screen much like Herns shows.  Is this menu what the Tech wants?

you don't have to hit any keys, it will boot to a black screen with boot :    to which you respond enter
then you get a blue screen with the menu

The tech discovered HIS problem. He pointed me to the wrong
download. I should have been downloading
http://www.ubcd4win.com/downloads.htm
It is from this that a boot cd in iso format is built.
And that has the gui interface and networking he wants.

Nevertheless, my UBCD411 iso (and I've downloaded and burned 10 of
them over the last week)  does not go to a blue screen when I press
enter at the boot: prompt.  It boots from the hd.

Thanks for your help. This is closed and I'm glad to give you
the points.
