Deleting System Volume Information

Hello, this is not going to be easy...

How do I delete the System Volume Information folder? It is on NTFS partition. However the problem is, I can neither find the System Restore tab in System Properties, nor find the Security tab on the Properties of the folder.

Why would you want to?  I hope this isn't on a boot volume? :^)

Is the service running?  Start->Run->Services.msc - look for system restore service
Try this...

Start->Run->CMD
cacls "G:\System Volume Information" /e /t /g Everyone:F

BTW, the System Restore snapshots can be cleared by simply stopping and restarting the System Restore service. (Services.msc)

For XP Home: Boot into Safe mode and login as Administrator, in order to access the Security tab.
For XP Prof  : Disable Simple File Sharing in Folder options. This enables the "Security" tab for file system folders.

Great! Now I have cleared the that folder, and Security tab is visible. However, still I can't find the System Restore tab in the System Properties dialog box?

Also, I would like to know why the permission of all the SVI folders were changed when the command I ran was only

cacls "E:\System Volume Information" /e /t /g Everyone:F

I had a folder in G drive also. It was also changed.. How?

will edit the acl of that folder to include Everyone with Full permission.

Obviously if security is a concern, you'd want to limit that access to only 'those that know what they're doing..."

LOL! Now it is being shown!!

I had just stopped and restarted it. But now it is being shown...

And about that command: I have two NTFS partitions, E & G. I had run the command cacls "E:\System Volume Information" /e /t /g Everyone:F
So, this should change permission for only E drive right? But the folder in G drive was also accessible after I ran this command. How was that?

Shouldn't be actually...unless they're the same drive mounted under two drive letters?

Perhaps you used the steps in the article KB309531 to configure Permissions for the G:\System Volume Information folder?

Also, it's highly recommended that you revert back the security settings to defaults one you've accomplished the task. SYSTEM groups has Full Control over this folder. And "Everyone" group has no permissions.

I am the SYSTEM, I am EVERYONE... I am the ALMIGHTY (only user) on this system :D

True, but with that setting, even the guest accounts can add files to SVI folder. And the incoming connections (to your computer from outside) are provided with guest privileges by default.

SYSTEM account is a seperate account used by windows - Everyone would be 'any' user that could gain access to your system locally or remote...
