Question

Windows has blocked this software because it can't verify the publisher

Asked by: jetdrive

I have recently installed Windows XP Pro SP2 on a spare PC that I have.  It installed fine, activated, and I have updated it with the all of the latest updates from Microsoft.

Here's the problem. There's a website that I use that displays activeX content.  It's a site that I trust and have used from all my other PC's that also have XP Pro on them.  When I get to the site, and load the page that has the activeX content, I get a Windows warning under the toolbar that states "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer stopped this site from installing an ActiveX control on your computer.  Click here for options..."  I then click and select the option to "Allow ActiveX".  At that point I get a Security Warning dialog box that says "Windows has blocked this software because it can't verify the publisher".  There is an OK button, but no option to accept anyway.  When I click OK, the dialog box disappears, but all I get is the red X where I'm supposed to see the content.

The dialog box only has an OK button, no option to allow the site anyway. When I press ok, the error box disappears and the location on the webpage that is supposed to display the content has nothing but the  red X tha appears when active x content doesn't display.

Here's what I have done so far:

- I've added the site in my Trusted Sites list.

- I've compared all of my settings with my other PC's that have no problem accessing this site.

- I've gone to Tools-Internet Options-Security, and basically allowed for everything that looks like it might allow the content, even to the point where windows security is constantly warning me that my computer is not secure.

There has to be a way to override this. I did a search on this website, but the last string and solution on this subject was back in 2004.  The accepted solution back then was to remove SP2.  I can't beleive that this is still a valid solution.  As I stated, I am running XP Pro SP2 on other machines with no problem.

I've now wasted way too much time on this.

Please help. Thanks.

Hi jetdrive,
try disabling windows firewall if you haven't already (I *presume* you're on a network), and disabling popup blocker

I am on my home network and I have Windows firewall disabled, as I use a PIX for my firewall.  Other PC's running XP Pro SP2 on my home network don't experience this problem.  I already disabled popup blocking on this PC as part of my troubleshooting process.

Thanks.

This has come up before on this site several times - use the search!

The solution given here will work for your problem:

and235100,

I did use the search, and none of the suggested solutions worked.  I had already tried the solution suggested in the link you provided prior to even searching this website - it doesn't fix the problem.

I don't have this problem with any of my other machines running XP Pro SP2.  I have compared my internet options with the machines that do work, and verified line by line that everything matches. Still no luck.

Thanks for the input.

OK - I fixed this thing.  Here's what happened.....

In reading my own response to and235100 above, I decided to once again compare my Internet Options line by line with one of my PC's that was not experiencing this problem.  Looking through the Advanced tab, I noticed that I did not have the latest version of Microsoft Java Virtual Machine installed.  This was most likely due to the fact that this was an older copy of XP that I had on the shelf for quite sometime.  Once I downloaded and installed Java Virtual Machine everything worked.

I am new to this site, so I am not sure what the protocol is for giving out points on a solution that I ended up figuring out on my own.  Technically, since writing my response to and235100 caused me to recheck something that I already did once, I just assume give the points to and235100.  Could someone please advise what the proper procedure for this is.

Thanks for your inputs.

I just wanted to add that I was still having the issue even after changing all the options that are in every single forum around the web.  I ended up taking the server out of its SurfControl group and it worked.  So for those of you who are using some kind of web proxy, take that into consideration as well.
