I have already done a hardware check using a couple of utilities, so far so good. But you are right
about the backing up of files and re-install. I was just hoping to repair. But it looks like too much
trouble and time, plus I myself would advise someone else the same.
Thank you. I'm accepting your solution, as I have a spare HD, and would like to start fresh on it.
So, the backups will work for that anyway. Again, thank you.

My suggestion would be to do all of the following:
com/
(1) Back up all your important files asap.
(2) Run hardware diagnostics, either using the diagnostics CD that came with your system, or get UBCD from http://www.ultimatebootcd.
(3) If no hardware errors are found, then reformat your disk and reinstall Windows, applications, data etc. Be sure to make a detailed list of all hardware first in case you need to reinstall drivers.
But start with step (1) and create two copies of your important files either on CD or USB memory or both.
