Question

Problem with Offline files in Windows Vista

Asked by: johan_strange

Hi, I have an issue with Offline Files in Vista that should be straight forward to resolve but I can not find the solution. The Server is SBS 2003, the client is Vista Business. I have Oplock disabled on the Server. There are two folders in a share that are available offline. They sync fine when the device is connected to the LAN and when offline the files are available as expected. The issue is that when I connect over a VPN connection I can not set the offline file status to online. I have gone with the local policy admin templates/network/offline files and made changes to two values.

Configure Slow link mode , I enabled this
path="\\servername\*" value="Latency=50"

Ping response is around 300ms through the VPN. I used a wildcard as I want the same value to apply to anything from this particular Server.

Configure Slow link speed
I enabled this and experimented with different Values.

When I am connected over the VPN I can connect to Exchange without issue, I can ping the Server so resolution and connectivity is not the issue I believe.

The answer will probably be obviously simple but I have searched many blogs and can not see the answer.

Sometimes this could be a DNS or WINS issue.  Can you try to add the hosts manually (as a test) to your host file (usually under c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) and see if this resolves your issue?

Thanks for the tip but as it is a Windows 2003/XP/Vista network WINS is not used. DNS is however and the hosts file has infact already been adapted to the environment. I can ping the file server and get a response , I can also connect to Exchange which runs on the same box so I do not think it is name resolution.

I know this is an old question but I have just resolved a similar problem on our network with XP clients (that is all we have).
Because our clients are set to use DHCP when they connect to an ISP they get their IP addresses from the ISP/Router they are using.
This will not include a WINS address which is valid on our network.
In fact the clients I have tested this on do not have any WINS addresses when connected to the ISP/Router.
Manually adding WINS addresses which are valid for our LAN resolved the problem.
Do this in Control Panel\Network Connections by Right Clicking on the Network card(s) you want to connect with, selecting TCPIP from the list on the General tab and then choosing Advanced.../WINS/Add
There may be more than one network card you need to do this for if you are connecting via your network card or via wireless for example.
Unfortunately 'ipconfig /all' does not indicate whether the WINS addresses have been manually added or assigned by DHCP but you can look in the registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters\Interfaces\Tcpip_{String of numbers representing your network card}
and you will see a Value named DhcpNameServerList showing the DHCP assigned addresses
and a Value named NameServerList showing manually assigned addresses.
You can find the correct String of numbers by looking at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Under each subkey of this you will see a Connection key.
Inside this you will see a text description of the connection to help you identify the right one e.g. Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection.

This has taken me a LONG time to resolve so I pass on the information in the hope that it will save you some of the frustration I have suffered.
