The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Pondering Question: Cable Internet With Surge Protectors -- Do I Use Coax Surge Protectors?

Asked by montecarlo1987 in Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, Networking Hardware

Tags: cable, coax, surge, do, protector

Hello. I have a question. I just switched from DSL to Cable Internet Service. WOW! LOVE IT! It is EarthLink Cable at 5.0 Mpbs, using a Motorola Cable Modem (This is an agreement between EarthLink and Time Warner Cable. I'm using Time Warner Cable's lines with EarthLink service.). Anyways, do I need to use a surge protector for the coax line between the outside of the house where the line comes in and the modem? I have spoken to some people and they tell me YES! They claim it will help prevent surges to the modem and ultimately protect my computer. YOU GOTTA HAVE IT! Others tell me NO! They claim that it will significantly slow down my speeds and/or can cause havoc with the modem. Are they both right? Should I do both? What should I do? Will it really show down my speeds? Will I really have potential harm if I don't use a surge protector? I understand that a surge protector for the modem power cord/plug is a good idea and will have no troubles using a surge protector that way. Please give me your imput and ideas, any suggestions. Also, please answer my concern regarding speed, moden issues, and computer protection. Thank you!
