Question

Windows transparent smb redirect from \\server\share to \\domain.local\DFS\share... is it possible?

Asked by: Wibble_

We keep our msi's on a server \\server\share. (e.g. \\server\share\office2003\office.msi)

We would like to move the msi's into DFS for better performance, and to reduce load on (new) wan links.

Is is possible to redirect all requests for \\server\share\* to \\domain.local\DFS\share\*

Hi there,

One way to do this would be to create another standalone DFS namespace on the server, and create a folder target pointing to \\domain.local\DFS\Share.

That way, broswing to \\server\share\folder would go to the same place as \\domain.local\DFS\share\folder.

Another way would be to create a symbolic link I think, but this method is simpler....

Hmm, \\server is a linux box runnin samba, so to make a standalone DFS namespace I'd need to bould a windows server called 'server'. This could be done, however it'd be nice if I didn't have to buy a windows license for just this...

Are you sure that this would redirect the traffic, not proxy it?

OK, that would be out of the question then. It would work, but as it's DFS it would need to be a windows box.

Would it be out of the question to change your software deployment policies to the new path? I assume your answer to this is 'YES, that's why I'm asking this question' :-)

I'm afraid my knowledge of linux is limited to say the least - as this would require a configuration on the linux box, I would recommend posting a question in the appropriate zone for this.

I think you might be able to create a symbolic link or to the DFS share, and share this out as \\server\share, so people browsing to this would be redirected to your DFS share, but like I say, this would be a config on the linux box so I couldn't help you.

Maybe this will help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_link
