You can upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista by purchasing zn upgrade product.

You can then upgrade from vista to 7 the only downside is you have to buy a vista and a windows 7 license.

See here for Windows 7 upgrade paths: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579(WS.10).aspx

and here for Windows Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradepaths.mspx

Hi,

Yes, of course you can upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 directly with all your data and settings. But there is also a way to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7 through Easy Transfer utility!

You can follow this http://www.nirmaltv.com/2009/08/06/how-to-upgrade-windows-xp-to-windows-7/

Faraz H. Khan

Your best bet is to erase your current Windows installation and start over with a fresh install of Windows; fresh installs are always better than an upgraded system, and two consecutive upgrades is bad karma.

farazhkhan's suggestion is great - I've personally used Windows Easy Transfer a couple times now and have yet to have any issues, it seems to do an excellent job of transferring every file & setting.

I have had mixed success with the easy transfer wizard.  Both good and bad.

My prefered route is also a clean install but I was trying to answer the question.

I just got this in an email from one of my channel partners (I haven't tested yet so I cannot recommend it but they did get the PcMagazine Editor's Choice so it is worth giving it a look):

".....Upgrading your PC to Windows 7? Only 14 of the 66 upgrade scenarios detailed by Microsoft are supported by Windows 7 and upgrading from XP to Windows 7 is not supported.....Thats why we created the Upgrade Assistant edition of PCmover. It helps you upgrade quickly and easily from any version of Windows (version 2000 or later) to Windows 7...... If you want to upgrade your computer from XP to Windows 7 and not lose all your files and programs, you need PCmover ...."

http://www.laplink.com/

The chart below shows the 66 Official upgrade scenarios......

This is what PcMagazine had to say about the above:

"....Laplink PCmover is an impressive piece of software for those who want to move on to Microsoft's latest and much-praised new operating system without losing all their precious apps and settings. It's worth the price of purchase for Vista users, because it's better than what Microsoft offers, and it can be a life saver for XP users, who aren't supported at all. Some of its processes seem geared towards migrations between two machines as opposed to an in-place upgrade, but that's a minor inconvenience. I think Laplink has addressed what is possibly the biggest obstacle to anyone wanting to upgrade to Windows 7, and I can't recommend the software highly enough....."

I agree with tgerbert and farazhkhan. Upgrading in two steps will work but it isn't good practise. Much of the mess which builds up over time in your installation is passed on.

Clean installation with Easy Transfer is the way to go.

As far as I'm concerned..... there is nothing better than a fresh clean install ..... I'll sign up with all the above on this advice..... Just trying to answer the question...

Actually..... according to Microsoft..... this is their advice as well see the attached document and link....

Just joining to set one small error straight:
> You can then upgrade from vista to 7 the only downside is you have to buy a vista and a windows 7 license
You don't need to activate vista before you do the second step of upgrading to W7 (nor you will need a key for vista), so there is no need to buy two licenses - you just need a suitable setup dvd.

We need to summarize here. Your question had 3 parts:

1.Does anyone know if i can upgrade from xp to vista then vista to windows 7?

2. i understand you can not upgrade from xp to windows 7 with out doing a clean install?

3. i know you can upgrade from vista to windows 7. so i was woundering if you can  go from xp to vista then go vista to windows7?

So to answer your questions (as of today.....maybe tomorrow new ways will surface):

1. Yes. Follow the upgrade paths posted on CommentID: 25706031.

2.. You can "upgrade" according to the makers of PcMover (as advertised by the manufacturer and selected as PcMagazine's Editor's Choice but untested by me to either recommend it or not) http://www.laplink.com/

3. Same answer as question 1. (Not the recommended path by Microsoft).

In your question you clearly understand the difference between a "Clean Install" and an "Upgrade" which is by definition "an option in which you do not lose all your files and programs when moving from Windows XP to Windows 7". The above are the answers to your questions.

I would appreciate some feedback from you.

by: senadPosted on 2009-11-03 at 20:24:07ID: 25736396

why would you do the upgrade jumping if it is not necessary?
if you have the software then sure....work your self to death...

The best solution would be to grad yourself a copy of win7 and use the transfer wizard, and upgrade straight from xp.  This way you have a fresh clean install, and you do not lose anything from your xp machine.  Remember to use the east transfer wizard on the 7 disk as the the xp version will not work with win 7.
