Hi Experts, I hope someone can help me with this.
I have Windows Server 2000 standard edition. I bought a new USB hard drive (Western Digital MyBook if it matters). I was logged in as a standard user when I plugged it in and got a message "you do not have sufficient rights to install hardware...." or similar. So I logged on as Administrator and was not prompted again to install the device; I had to do it via Control Panel > Add/Remove Hardware.
The device installed a driver OK (it was %WINDIR%/system32/usb.inf)
but as it was installing I saw my "Safely Remove Hardware" icon disappear from the tray. (I also have a USB CD/RW drive). The icon did not come back.
My USB hard drive and my USB CD-ROM both show up in My Computer and both seem to function correctly. However, I cannot remove them.
Going to Start - Run - "Control.exe hotplug.dll" shows the Safely Remove Hardware dialog, but it is empty - previously it showed my USB CD drive.
If I simply unplug one of the devices, I get a message from windows reminding me that I should be using the "Safely Remove Hardware" option - so it is aware that the device is USB.
If I plug in another USB device, say, a flash drive - I get the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray, but when I click the icon it only shows the flash drive, and NOT my USB hard drive or CD drive.
Please help, how can I get Windows 2000 to recognize my hotplug devices are hotplug again?
