Windows XP SP1 CD Error causing problem on repair install

Tags: Windows XP, SP1
Hi,
I have had the most weirdest problem with my PC.

I had a power cut during the day while I was at work a few weeks ago.
I came home to find my PC switched off, so I restarted it, and found that it took too long to load.

Then I saw that the Video card was not displaying correctly and thats why I assumed it was loading slowly at the welcome screen.

I do not have the internet at home, so I can easily say its not a virus thats caused any of the problems i'm having.

So I tried installing the drivers I had on my Hard Drive and everything seemed to be fine. But that was not the case the PC would randomly reboot, when opening, or running something.

I then decided to do a repair install. So I took out my Win XP SP1 CD and went through the installation, that seemed to take forever to finish.

I found half way that the PC wanted me to insert the Windows XP CD because it could not pick up the necessary file from the CD that was in there.

So I had a copy of Win 2000 and used that as the first thing it asked for was times.ttf, it always asks me for that using my XP CD.

The version of XP I have is a Campus license that was given to me by my University. So it is fully legit and nothing dodgey about it.

It kept asking me to put in the XP CD even though there was an XP CD in there.

I have a copy of XP SP2 on another CD but that does not have the same file structure so the install program cannot find the files it needs.

I then decided to skip what it could not find and finally got to the end.

Windows was installed and I activated it, and reinstalled what I could.

What I have discovered is that my USB memory stick cannot be found. My USB mouse can, so I do not know if there is anything I need to enable?

My Sony DVD drive does not pick up some disks, or autorun any disks.

I still have my old Hitachi DVD drive and I installed that and it would pick up autorun and other disks, but the 3rd hard drive would disappear, so I need to set the Hitachi DVD to master.

I've tried installing SP2 & SP3 but it says windows installer is not running or not installed.

So I downloaded Windows Installer 3.1 and still nothing.

I have acronis true image backups of my PC but they are from a year ago and I cannot seem to run True image because it says there are no hard drives present on the pc.

So I've left the PC off and use it now and again, but I cannot save to USB stick or install any programs.

I did the sfc.exe /scannow and that seemed to work but the PC is still not working.

Is there a way I can save the XP CD and try repair install again?

Or can I use another CD or method to get my PC back to normal?

Please help me, I have work and irreplaceable things on this PC.

:'(
