Asked by: Jukiee

Friends bought a computer at garage sale and upgraded 3.11 with 6.22. Now they cannot get windows or games at all..They couldn't make backup's of files before upgrading.
At boot up the window looks like this.

Himem is testing extended memory...done.
c:\>c:\DOS\SMARTDRIVE.EXE /X

The computer came without any disks or drivers, no windows program for installing...What can be done please.
Thank you for your support.

Jukiee,

It most likely already had DOS 6.xx installed as the operating system
if Windows 3.11 was also previously installed...

Windows 3.11 is a program and DOS 6.22 is the operating system...
So if you upgraded to 6.22, that number would pertain to
the OS and not the Windows version...

But Windows 3.11 is probably still installed if no other changes were made...
If so, you can launch it from the command line when you get to the DOS prompt...

You can test it by typing  WIN  or  C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM ...

If you get an error, look on the system for the Windows directory...

Please post back with your results...
If Windows runs from the command line,
the upgrade probably removed the command
that launches Windows from the Autoexec.bat file...

If you try that and can't get it running manually,
paste copies of your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files here
and indicate whether you located the Windows directory on your C: drive...
If Windows 3.11 still exists on the drive, it'll then be a simple matter to get it running...

Hello Rin1010,

I am ever so grateful as Windows came up when I typed in
C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM...

Is there a way to make it boot to open Windows first thing please? also they have lost their DOS games. With 6.22 can games be loaded and if so are these games that run only in 6.22?

I myself run Win 98sec so have little knowledge of OS's before that. Would the games be added through WINDOWS or in DOS?

Thank you for your help I really appreciate your quick response and support, it is such a blessing.

Jukiee,

Windows 3.xx typically launches after Config.sys and Autoexec.bat
have been processed by issuing the WIN.COM command
as the last line of the Autoexec.bat file...

Running the upgrade probably changed other configuration items
in these two files, so again, if you can paste copies of the
Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files in this thread,
I'll edit each to make it run correctly
and to optimize DOS ...

To do it yourself, just append the command  C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM
as the last line in the Autoexec.bat file...

Indicate if you want help or more info about editing the Autoexec.bat file...
But the best way is to open each from the system's root directory
using MS-DOS Editor at the DOS prompt command line
or by using Notepad from within Windows...

Or copy the files to a floppy and then paste their contents here.

The Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files reside in the root directory of the C: drive.
To do it from a command prompt using Editor, change to the root directory
or open the file for copying, editing and saving using this command:

EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT

Once you've got Config.sys and Autoexec.bat cleaned up and optimized,
it'll be easier to answer your questions about loading/running games, etc.

Please post back and paste copies of those files here
and provide whatever other details you can about
whether these are DOS or Windows games.

Hello Rin1010,

With the 6.22 upgrade can you please tell me how I get into reading drive A:\ in Windows. Also the drivers for the CD Rom are missing, I have no idea what drivers to look for on the net and even if I find them, how to install them. I hope I am not over loading you with all these questions of help.
I was able to open a file called More information about Microsoft Windows for Workgroups Version 3.11. On reading it I found this:6.0  Using SMARTDrive Version 5.0

This section describes some solutions to problems that you might encounter when using SMARTDrive version 5.0 (provided with Windows for Workgroups) with specific applications or hardware.

6.1  Accessing Floppy Disk Drives on Older COMPAQ DESKPROS

On some COMPAQ DESKPRO® 386/16 and 386/20 computers, you might experience problems accessing floppy disk drives when SMARTDrive version 5.0 is installed. To work around the problem, you can try one of the following solutions:

· Place the SMARTDrive buffer into low memory by adding the following option to the smartdrv command line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

smartdrv  /L

· Disable the caching on floppy disk drives by adding the following options to the smartdrv command line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

smartdrv  a-  b-

For more information about these options, see "Managing Memory and Performance" in your Windows or Windows for Workgroups user's guide.

6.2  Using SMARTDrive with Double Buffering

Most expanded-memory emulators attempt to optimize SMARTDrive by configuring it to load into upper memory blocks (UMBs). This will cause problems if you are running Windows for Workgroups with double buffering. If you need to use double buffering with SMARTDrive, make sure that SMARTDrive is configured to load into low memory. The SMARTDrive command line in your CONFIG.SYS file should look like this:

device=smartdrv.exe  /double_buffer

You do not need to change the references to SMARTDrive in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

If you're using a SCSI device, some vendors provide a driver (such as ASPI4DOS) that supplies double-buffering already. You should not use SMARTDrive double-buffering in this case. Check your SCSI device documentation, or contact your SCSI device vendor to determine whether your driver has its own double-buffering. If it does, use the following command line:

device=smartdrv.exe  /double_buffer+

This command line should also be used if your system hangs when starting Windows, or if you are using a SCSI drive with a UNIX® partition.

For more information about using double buffering with SMARTDrive, see "Managing Memory and Performance" in your Windows or Windows for Workgroups user's guide.

Will I have to do what is suggested to get Windows to read A:\ ?

Also the CD ROM Drive is not working...could you help me out here, where do I get the driver/files that will make it work, and How? to install them.

I appreciate what you have done suppotively to get windows to show, and do appreciate any help you are able to give to get cd-rom and Floppy to open.

There can't be too much wrong with A:\ drive if I was able to save files onto a disk, just can't find where in 3.11 Windows to find icon/something...that will allow me to open a Floppy.

Thank you again.
Jukiee

by: rin1010Posted on 2002-10-06 at 17:45:05ID: 7317561

Jukiee,

If you merely need to determine whether the floppy drive is working right,
you can test accessing the A: drive from the command prompt
by putting a disk in the floppy drive and then typing:

dir a:

From within Windows, use File Manager to access the floppy drive...
If Program Manager doesn't have a File Manager icon,
use the Run dialog from the File menu
and type:    WINFILE

Post back with your results if you still can't find it.
Once you access the floppy, copy and then paste
copies of Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files here,
as that is where the CDROM drivers are loaded...

I can provide CDROM drivers if necessary,
e.g. it's a typical ATAPI IDE CDROM drive,
but may need to know that CDROM drive's
type, manufacturer and model number...

Do you mean that you've successfully accessed the
floppy drive from the command prompt after booting?
If so, then it should be available under Windows too.
SmartDrive is also configured from Autoexec.bat file
although the info you pasted pertains to loading the
SmartDrive commands from there or Config.sys ...

It's preferable to configure it from Autoexec.bat
and floppy drive caching can easily be disabled
although that probably shouldn't be necessary.

So paste copies of Config.sys and Autoexec.bat
here if possible and we can configure each item.

Hello,

Thank you for everything. I did go to Program manager and type in Winfile and Yes! that worked and I was able to get at the Floppy o.k. also noticed the .exe to most of the game files, so looks as if they can be reinstalled...

I am not sure how to copy and paste the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files. I went into c:\Dir and then made a copy onto Floppy of the two files...couldn't find the Windows Editor you have mentioned so did it DOS wise? only after doing copy they would not paste into comments area.

Earlier this morning I took the cover of the computer box and found the CD Rom name and ID: then went to Drivers.com and downloaded it...I printed out the install for the drivers but it all looks ever so complicated so for me it would be a wonderful gift if I could copy and paste to you the files you are needing.
The driver files for CD Rom...Model CR-562-B I.D:IUO9TBOOCRB- I think it is an 0 or D beside the nine.
What I have downloaded is:
Driver for Matsushita Mdl:CR 562 B

I will reread how to save the two files and try to do this in Note pad and get this to you.

Hopefully I will still be online...a huge storm coming so may need to close down for awhile.

Will try and get straight to it...

Thank you again.

Hello,

I went into MS-DOS Editor and saved the files to disk only still have no idea how to get them to you. I also added did the Edit C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and saved in System file only it didn't work for me. I feel lost in DOS, but grateful to be learning.

The file shows only Autoexec.bat on the Floppy so assume Config is within Autoexec.bat...how to get them to you is another thing. Do I drop and drag them into this window?

Address for the CR Rom driver:http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads11/28851.html

I tried drop and drag...didn't work, turned into an email.

Will read up and how to save files to Note Pad.

Hello,

This is a hand copy of what is in Autoexec.bat.

c:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $P$G
PATH C:\DOS
SET TEMP = C:\DOS
MSCDEX ID:MSCDOO1 /V
AND I ADDED IN THIS LINE HERE: C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM

When I went to check in Config.sys again, there was nothing in there.

I used the little boot disk that was made by owners to boot up and when I typed in:
c:\windows\win.com
I got this.
Missing HIMEN.SYS

Make sure that the file is in your Windows directory and that it's location is correctly specified in your config.sys file.

When HIMEN.sys is added to Config.sys, what directory in Windows is it saved to...Config.sys? I think when I tried to copy and paste files to send to you that I did something wrong.

All the games are DOS.

Can I just type in Himen.sys in Config.sys and save..this is why I wanted to know what directory it is saved in please.

Thank you.

Hello Rin1010,

I went to www.bootdisk.com and downloaded Bootdisk files for MSDOS6.22. I also went to address below and found these Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files.
http://www.computerhope.com/ac.htm

If I follow what they suggest, would that install what is needed in Config.sys please.

If you no longer wish to help me could you please say so, I really am in the need of support but I need you to confirm if you are willing to help, if not could you recommend a support person that would want to help a beginner please.

Jukiee,

I'm glad to try helping you with it
and apologize for not responding sooner
but had trouble accessing EE when I was able to try.

In fact I downloaded the CD driver the day you posted it
and looked at what you had there and wrote some info for you...
Now with your new details I think we can get it optimized for effective use.

But I will mention that your original question and the solution
would typically be worth the initial 50 question points or so
and the continuing support for the various other questions
would usually warrant a few hundred when dealing with
the other problems and troubleshooting those, etc...
I know you get the points slow and may not have many
and I'll for sure continue to help you with it regardless of
whether you up it but you might consider having the people
you're helping to create an EE account and post some points
with reference to our respective handles here in this same TA:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win95_3x/Win3x/

So I'll type some comments about your recent questions
and some suggestions for getting the CD drive working...

Regarding that; did you successfully extract the CDROM driver
from the self-extracting executable downloaded from the link you posted?

If not, run the executable in an empty directory
and four files will be extracted.
Copy the file named CDMKE.SYS
to the C:\DOS directory on that computer.

That specific cdrom drive model number you posted indicates a drive
having the mke proprietary interface (as opposed to the atapi ide I mentioned.)
These proprietary drives plug into an adapter or into a sound card interface
and use a certain driver loaded from Config.sys ...

If you have the correct model, then it's a Matsushita/Panasonic
and the driver shown in your posted Config.sys example is different
and perhaps not the correct driver (unless you've successfully loaded it.)

But that isn't a good Config.sys configuration
and you need the Autoexec.bat syntax to be correct
so I'll put together and post a configuration for each file
which you can copy and save and transfer to the system...

As you probably know now, both Config.sys and Autoexec.bat
must reside in the root directory of the C: drive,
so save and copy both files to  C:\

The Config.sys I'll provide will be configured to load
the CDMKE.SYS device driver for the CD drive
and will load it from the path of  C:\DOS ...
So you need to extract that file from
the download and copy it to the
C:\DOS directory...

So I'll get started on that but wanted to respond
to your concern about the help, etc.,
and apologize for the delay.

And here's another url where you can download a copy of
a self-extracting executable having the CDMKE.SYS driver
for that 2X proprietary CR-562 CDROM drive that will provide
DOS / Windows 3.1 / Windows For Workgroups 3.11 support ...

http://www.mke.panasonic.co.jp/data/mkehp/docs/driver/56x_dos.exe

Also you mentioned downloading a DOS 6.22 boot disk...
If you need a couple of good msdos boot disks, I keep various copies on a server
and you can download from there applications that you can run in Windows
that will create the boot disks for you. These disks are already configured
to load an atapi ide cdrom driver but that can be edited and this can
still be useful for booting to DOS 6.22 for troubleshooting, etc...
Download these if you want and put a good floppy disk in
and run the applications to create the boot disks...

Here's where you can get them and I'll post back soon with more info...

~ DOS 6.22 Boot Disk :

http://users.aol.com/bydesigns/bootdisk/dos622.exe

~ Windows 98se Boot Disk :

Hello Rin1010,

I do feel sorry for being so pushy, I apologise for having thought you were no longer helping me. I hope your troubles are over.
I did extract the CD-Rom drivers and get it working only again, I have done something wrong and the computer won't boot today. I downloaded emm386.exe and himem.sys and somehow installed them properly yesterday as all was working well. I was not sure how to save them but went into Config.sys and autoexec.bat and hit the save button. The computer acted great until I went and booted it this morning.
The people live in the town and are not on the net...this is their first computer. Can I register them with EE to help make the points? I really want to get their computer going as they are good people.

I have down loaded the bootdisks and 56x dos cd rom from the links you have sent me, thank you.

I am going to see if I can get it up again, will post what is in Config and Autoexec when this happens...will save as you have asked to c:\dos..

I am grateful for your contact and help.

Hello Rin1010,

I have it up and going again.

In Config.sys I have.

Device=c:\dos\himem.sys
Device=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems
Dos=High,umb.

I hit the save button and when i went to close the screen it said I had not saved the file..save now..I hit enter and it saved. Wish I knew what I was doing..feel like I have an empty head regards saving in Config.

In Autoexec.bat:
c:\dos\smartdrv.exe /x
@echo off
Path c:\dos
mscdex /d:mscd001 /v
c:\windows\win.com...added by me after reading your answer. This does not work though as I am sure I have not done it right.
Now I did a search of EE to find how I can get more points and what is offered has no bearing on my world..wish I was able to contribute to you what you deserve.
I found I had 80 points so hope you get them.
Now I am going to read Get the most out of your P.C "config.sys" "Autoexec.bat" that I found on
www.knowWareGlobal.com and see what I can learn so that I am able to understand things better. I printed it out to help me.

Thanks again.
Jukiee.

I forgot to add this.
When I reinstalled CD.Rom driver..dos read like this.

Saving exisiting Config.sys as Config.001
Saving existing Autoexec.bat as Autoexec.bat as Autoexec.001.

Hi Jukiee,

I had put together some stuff for you,
but with your recent changes and updated info
I'll need to edit what I have and will then post it all here...

Also didn't mean for you to give me what few points you have
but you can create an email address and new EE account
for the people you're helping and then later post another
question in this topic area using their provided points
and address the subject to my EE account name.

But I'm not worried about it and just hope to get it working...
Let me take some time to edit what I have and I'll then
post my suggested configurations for that system.

Hello Rin1010,

Thank you. I will work out how to make other email addresses today sometime. I appreciate all you are doing and am happy to say that when I booted the computer this morning I had no mishap, must have saved things the right way.

Have a great day and thank you.

Jukiee,

I'll post here my recommended configurations for
Config.sys and Autoexec.bat on that system
to increase and optimize performance.

This configuration loads the programs and drivers
from the C:\DOS directory so you need to ensure
that each file is located in the C:\DOS  directory.

I'm not clear what you've done regarding the files
you downloaded and their versions and location.

I'll paste a list of files to be loaded from Config.sys and Autoexec.bat
including their dates and files sizes, and if you get an error
you can then compare for correct files.

HIMEM.SYS           29,136
EMM386.EXE         120,926
MSCDEX.EXE         25,361
SMARTDRV.EXE    45,145

If any of the files don't match, you can restore the correct copies
from a boot floppy created with the 6.22 app I posted previously.

If the correct files reside in the  C:\DOS  directory,
the configuration I'll post here should load okay...

When booting with this configuration, you can watch for
any error messages that may be generated
and we'll then fix that specific problem.

For example, the cdrom driver accepts certain parameters
that may need to be added... The defaults should work,
but if the driver generates an error while loading,
or the drive doesn't work after booting,
then we'll troubleshoot that.

When creating the new Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files
you must copy what I paste here exactly as shown...
A single wrong letter or character in the syntax
will cause one or more items to not load.

You can save each file from this page to a floppy disk
using the system from where you're accessing EE ...

Copy and paste each into Notepad and save as
Config.sys and Autoexec.bat respectively.

Once you have copies of these Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files
on the floppy disk, you will copy them to the root directory; i.e.,    C:\
on the other system, and overwrite its current Config.sys and Autoexec.bat ...

You probably have a good idea of how this works now
and you may also prefer to use alternative methods
to copy the files there, but just get them in the
root directory by copying them to :   C:\

I'm sure I've forgotten to mention something
and you've provided excellent feedback...
But we can deal with any other bugs
once the startup is configured ok...

So I'll paste here my recommended configurations
for your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files ...

Copy only the portions between the (====) separating lines...
Post back with your results or any error messages
or if you have questions about any of it...

Hello Rin1010,

I am not sure what you mean by copying the files to notepad or from where.

Copy and paste each into Notepad and save as
Config.sys and Autoexec.bat respectively.

Do I do this from the DOS area of my computer? I am sorry I don't understand this, it is probably my lack of experience.

Also, do I make the new addresses for my friends from my server's address. I have enquired if I can have more than one email account and wait for the answer.

I have work to attend this morning but will print out what you have written when I return home and read it carefully and hope the penny drops for me.

Thank you very much for the time and effort you have put into helping me, I am grateful.

Hello Rin1010,

I have saved the Config.sys and autoexec.bat files onto a floppy..when I opened the floppy it shows only autoexec.bat..is that right please.

I don't want to try and boot the system until I know I have saved the config.sys and autoexec.bat properly to floppy. When I do boot with it, is there something I must do for files to be copied to computer.

I have made two new email adresses..I can only get my EE page to come up and cannot find where to make the new registrations to help add more points for support given.

I hope I have copied files properly.

Thank you for your help.

Jukiee.

Hello Rin1010,

I booted the computer using the config.sys and autoexec.bat files...the screen showed.

Not recognised as Bootdisk please whatever...
I then got windows up and used MSDOS.
A:\ copy config.sys c:\
A:\ copy autoexec.bat C:\

I then went into:

edit config.sys and found...

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS /VERBOSE
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE /NOEMS /VERBOSE
DOS=HIGH,UMB
FILES=30
BUFFERS=10
STACKS=8,128
FCBS=1,0
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\CDMKE.SYS /D:CDDRIVE

did the same for autoexec.bat and found...

@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $P$G
PATH C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS
SET TEMP=C:\DOS
LOADHIGH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:CDDRIVE /V
LOADHIGH C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X /V
C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM

I hit the save button before I closed each window.

I rebooted computer and it still came up with

C:\

I hope I have done it right as I was expecting either a dos menu or windows to open when fully booted.

Could you tell me how I can save the drivers to floppy disk please..other drivers than CDRom...Mouse, Video, Sound etc:

Thank you for your help...

Rin was saying that

Copy and paste each into Notepad and save as
Config.sys and Autoexec.bat respectively.

meaning that

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS /VERBOSE
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE /NOEMS /VERBOSE
DOS=HIGH,UMB
FILES=30
BUFFERS=10
STACKS=8,128
FCBS=1,0
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\CDMKE.SYS /D:CDDRIVE

is your config sys file - copy from HERE i.e that which is above into notepad, then save in notepad as config.sys

the following is yor autoexec.bat  this should get the same treatment as the config.sys text (copy from here into notepad and save as autoexe.bat)

@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $P$G
PATH C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS
SET TEMP=C:\DOS
LOADHIGH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:CDDRIVE /V
LOADHIGH C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X /V
C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM

hope that makes it a bit clearer.

otherwise you are in excellent hands, i can't fault anything that Rin has suggested, i expect if you follow all instructions religiously, you'll ge things sorted out in no time.

Good luck

Hello Alexgreen,

I have been able to do as Rin1010 has asked and Config.sys and Autoexec.bat read as he has given. I am now trying to work out how to recover the Dos games from c:\.
Make a menu that shows on boot up...the previous Batch files are there, and now I am reading all I can to get what is on computer to work again. I am trying to understand how I can save the Video/Sound and Mouse etc: driver files to floppy.
I have been asking around for old dos books so I can make friends computer work properly and hopefully make Backup of it all so that if problems happen again it will be easier. It is hard because the computer came to them with no software or drivers, just as it was setup. I am not educated in dos so must be causing Rin1010 concerns with all I ask, I am sorry I am so slow to understand.
Also, by clicking on the dos games from Winfile, the games come up only the mouse does not work so am trying to work out how to get this right.
I have also made two more email addresses that I had hopes of being able to use to join the owners up to E.E to support Rin1010 to receive points he deserves. When my E.E. page comes up there is nowhere to join new seekers..I feel sad I have not been able to do this.
I am reading up how to make Menu in dos so computer boots with a window for owners to choose programs from, this was how the computer was until the MSDos 6.22 was installed without the saving of files.
I know I don't present myself as confident in repairing the computer but keep trying, it is their first computer and even though old it took them some time to save to get it.
I have not ment in anyway to be a bother to anyone, I am slow to learn and accept that, but I do try.
Thank you for your input.
I also wrote to many addresses given on URL dos sights and some of the emails I recived back were very cruel and hurtful....beginners don't know anything and that's why I ask as a beginner...
If there is a way to get the points to Rin1010 please help this to happen. I am prepared to send what monies I am able to afford to him for what he has done to help me if there is an address to send this too..I do not want to burden anyone.

Thank you for what has been done to help.

in the autoexec, you have to load the mouse drivers too

DEVICE="path to the drivers for the Mouse" I'd have to have a bit of a look at some old stuff to give you a better idea.  you may have a folder called c:\Mouse on the machine.
I hope i am right in saying that Rin?

My Mum and dad may have an old dos book or two, i'll see when i am next down there

I'll get back to you.

Hello Alex,

I did c:\dir /w and found mouse.sys and mouse.com, I realise both Config.sys and autoexec.bat must be edited so I can add them. Due to finding mouse.com and .sys I will read up to see how I add them and what goes to config.sys or autoexec.bat.

I am grateful for you support and help, I have printed out heaps of help pages from the net and will see if there is anything re: mouse.sys and .com on any of the pages.

Thank you
Julie

I have just remembered what needs to be done with Win3.x for games.  Basically you are better off having a dedicated boot disk for games - one that bypasses win related files / ".sys" libraries.
what you might like to is copy the disk you already have and then remove PATH C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS and C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM.
Add your Mouse call functions and the sound card references (not sure off the top of my head) and away you go.  I seem to remember using multiple boot disks for games (almost one for each and tayloring the disk exactly to the game.)  Lots of older programes based in dos were "TSR" programmes i.e. "Terminate and Stay Resident" programmes. -  they continued to eat up system resources after being exited, even after a reboot unless the reboot bypassed the main startup files and loaded it's own set of commands.
By using a boot disk for each game, you can ensure best functionning of each game.

That's probably the limit of most of my knowledge unless I find one of my old boot disks (maybe unlikely as I suspect they may be on 5 1/4" disks)

if you want ideas on building .bat files in a menu system on startup, I used to do it for fun (and to assist technophobic parents)

Hello Alexgreen,

I have got the mouse working in most of the dos games, I added to Config.sys:
Device=C:\WINDOWS\MOUSE.SYS

And to Autoexec.bat:

C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.COM

I have been able to click on the 3dMenu.exe in the folder on C:\ and bring it come. I am now trying to find what I must do to get that to boot up when the computer boots, and to connect all the programs within it so that they work.

Will I have to make new batch files for these? If so I am grateful for your support. I am reading how to find dos driver files and how to save them to floppy, that way they will be on disk in case owners have trouble again.

I have hand written into a book all the files in dos as well as win files, I thought being able to refer to what is on the hard drive would be helpful as I go. Stil a few more files to write down (subfiles I think they are called)but am getting there.

Thank you for your supportive offer re: Batchfiles. I so wish to get the computer fixed and returned so I can get back to my own studies.

Hello,

After doing what was suggested in the above without result (Asked a computer friend to take a look at it for me) the owners asked if I would format and install Win 98.
Thank you for the support and help, I am grateful.
