Scott,
It'd be hard to tell what's causing that specific GPF and installation problem,
but I know that even if you were to get past the installation errors
that you'll encounter many other faults and errors...
Windows (any version) isn't very compatible with FreeDOS
(for various reasons, mostly relating to memory management)
and you'll encounter numerous crashes regardless of workarounds.
Browse the FreeDOS site and their FAQ for more details about it
and you may find some better info on installing and running Windows 3.1...
But I would recommend using only MS-DOS 6.22 to eliminate Windows 3.1 errors...
Please post back if you have other questions about it
and include whatever details you can about the
protection fault and system configuration.
