DVD/CD drive not visible

My dvd/cd drive is no longer visible under "my computer," and I cannot load cd's.  The error message at device manager is:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.  The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39) ).

Do I just need to install device drivers from the internet?  If so, please send link.
Device stopped working after I "uninstalled" several games that came pre-installed on my laptop.Start Free Trial

Try the Toshiba Support Center.  They have a lot of stuff listed for Vista & the DVD drives.  Typically you don't have to do all of this for CD/DVD drives but we are taylking about Vista....

Sorry, I should have added that I've already downloaded all of the files from the Toshiba support center that had anything to do with cd/dvd drives.

Code 39 is normally fixed by deleting upper and lower filters, could you try?

do you have the Vista disc that came with the laptop or that you purchased?  if so you should, in theory, be able to delete the drive from the device manager & let the "Add New Hardware Wizard" discover the drive again.  it may prompt for the drivers but typically those drivers for the CD/DVD roms are preloaded on the OS disc.  it's typically just an atapi file...

Just found the answer at Toshiba.  I uninstalled Napster which, as it turns out, causes the cd/dvd drive to not be visible.  I'll need to copy the file from the recovery disk using a 2nd computer onto a flash drive and then connect the flash drive to my laptop and reinstall.
