Media Player won't play *.avi files

I can't get Media Player to play my *.AVI files. I've tried un-installing and re-installing Media Player. I've tried un-installing and re-installing the compression CODECS. I've tried un-installing and re-installing the Media Control Devices. I've made sure that the Motion Video Device is enabled, and is being used. I can play *.AVI files fine if I want to use ActiveMovie to play them, but I don't. I prefer to use Media Player, and I'm very frustrated about this whole thing. I even tried reinstalling a lot of the DLLs to the system folder. Video for Windows *is* listed as one of the devices in Media Player's menu, and when I click on Video for Windows, it shows me files of type "Video for Windows (*.avi)". The error message I get is "MMSYSTEM296 The file cannot be played on the specified MCI device. The file may be corrupt, or not in the correct format." Nothing is working for me. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions are greatly appreciated.
