The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Persistent invalid toolbar shortcut

Asked by chanx in Windows 95 Operating System

I have Win95 OSR/2 with MSIE 4.01SR1 and a custom desktop installed.  I used to be networked to a workgroup (called "MIS") but no longer am.  I had made a taskbar "toolbar shortcut."  Now I can't get rid of it.

Oh, I can close it, mind you, but when I reboot it comes back.

I have tried lots of heavy-duty tricks, including painstakingly searching the registry (found nothing interesting); creating a new toolbar shortcut and comparing registry entries (I don't think it's in there!); using a drive synchronization program (FileSync 2.01, which I highly recommend -- see www.winfiles.com) and comparing my Windows, Office, MSIE, and, finally, entire 4-partition system before and after creating a new shortcut; etc., etc.  I simply cannot find where Windows stores this information!  Worse, I consider myself a 99th-percentile Win95 expert.  Maybe I'm just missing something stupid?

Finally, I know by analogy to drive sharing that if a linked resource is removed, W95 can have problems getting rid of references to it.  With shared (nonexistent) drives, my solution is always to temporarily share another drive using the same share-name, then unshare it.  The recalcitrant share goes away.  Well, I tried this, too, creating a new toolbar shortcut names "MIS"; but it doesn't persist through a reboot, and the old, bogus one still keeps coming back!  Help!

This question is worth more than 60 points to me, but that's all I have left today. :-)
