The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Missing Sound Drivers

Tags: aptiva, audio, 2162, driver
Sorry, I've done something stupid.  I have an IBM Aptiva Type 2162 Model S35, about 2 1/2 years old, running Windows 95.  When having a cable modem
and software installed, I lost my sound.  Control Panel\System\Device
Manager showed 2 conflicts in the section "Sound, video and game
controllers, "Crystal PnP Audio System Control Registers" and "Crystal PnP
Audio System MPU-401 Compatible".  Also showing were "Crystal PnP Audio
System CODEC", Crystal PnP Audio System Joystick", and Wave Device for Voice
Modem".  I was told to try deleteing them, putting in my Windows 95 disk,
and rebooting.  So I deleted all 5 items and rebooted.  Got the message to
insert the disk with the Directx drivers, which of course IBM didn't
provide.  Now nothing shows (actually both show CS4237B) in place of the "...MPU-401 Compatible" or the
"...CODEC", and I have no sound.  (The others did get restored from the
Windows disk.)  Can you help me out of the mess I got myself into?

First of all go to www.driverzone.com and download the drivers for your soundcard. Next take out the sound card and reinstall it so it has a good conection, when you reboot windows should tell you it has found the card and you can install the drivers that you downloaded.

perfectpc
The best way to answer questions on the site is to just provide "comments" and let the questioner pick the answer(s) to reward.  When you propose an "answer" you lock the question and move it on the opening page from the questions seeking answers (where most people will look to provide help) to the locked questions category, where it will get less attention.  If the questioner asks a simple, almost yes or no, question then proposing an answer is fine; otherwise, we all work together until the problem is solved, then let the questioner grade all the comments for best answers.  You can change your proposed answer to a comment, please do so........

Looks like I could have gotten there from this.  Did put me into a site with Cirrus drivers.  2nd best response I got.  Not sure where I go from here, i.e., how points are awarded, etc.  Think I'd award perfectpc & johnsaviour 50 points each, trekiel 100.  But trekiel did give the answer I needed, although his description was hard to follow.

S O R R Y . . . . First time trying to use this, and was happy with result.  But I'm afraid I've messed up the proper allocation of points to the guys (and gals ... let's not be sexist) who took the time to share their knowledge.  To Ronin, 0 points ... appreciate the answer, and it put me into an IBM site with downloads of updates to some of their stuff ... but I couldn't find any drivers.  To Laser1, 0 points.  Put me into a site with Directx drivers, but if you read my problem, the problem was vendor specific.  To johnsavior - 50 points.  put me into a Cirrus site that I think I could have recovered what I needed from.  To trekiel, 100 points in that his answer was right on FOR ME.  He pointed out that the files were on my Diagnostic Disk.  Can't give him all the points, cause you'd have to be VERY familiar with IBM practices to point me there, but, again, that was the right answer for ME.  I'd also give 50 of the 200 points to perfectpc, although I found his suggested site a bit confusing.  But I don't have the least idea how points actually get awarded (or coversely, how they are subtracted from me) but hope all get some reward.  If anybody would like to explain to me how points are determined/awarded, you can reach me at elliff1@pdq.net
AGAIN ... THANKS TO ALL, got my problems fixed!!!
