I have a Compaq Presario 5224 (100MHz) with Japanese Windows 95.
I have a SCSI hard disk which has been partitioned (D:, E:, F:)
I now have an MP3 walkman which looks (to Windows) like a removable disk when I install the software.
My CD-ROM drive is no longer detected.
When I boot, and then type F8 to go to a DOS prompt, I notice that the following error has occurred:
LH: C:\CPQDOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:IDECD001
Couldn't find device driver 'IDECD001'.
No effective CD-ROM device driver chosen.
(Excuse the rough translation from Japanese)
------
I have tried:
Removing All the CD-ROM stuff in the Device manager in the hope that Windows will detect the device and reinstall what is necessary.
Running FDISK /MBR at the DOS prompt and rebooting
Removing any existing NoIDE entry from the registry and rebooting. (This has fixed the problem in the past).
Removing any existing subfolders of hdc in the registry and rebooting.
Putting LASTDRIVE=Z in the config.sys and rebooting.
-----
I don't know where to find the latest device driver for the standard CD-ROM for my Presario 5224, but if Windows isn't detecting the device anyway then this is probably not the immediate problem.

My autoexec.bat is:

I found the following lines in bootlog.txt:
Loading Device C:\CPQDOS\CPQIDECD.SYS
LoadFailed C:\CPQDOS\CPQIDECD.SYS
This looked like the only place where anything "failed".
You can't say I haven't done my homework. :-)
