No drive letter for PC-card hard drive.

Why won't Win95 assign a drive letter to my PCMCIA hard drive?

I have a 486 ISA/PCI based desktop system with 16meg of memory running Win95. I have installed a Linksys dual PCMCIA port adapter. Installation went fine (no error messages of any kind). It is using Win95's "standard PCMCIA driver". Installation was according to Linksys installation instructions.

The adapter itself seems to work fine. When I insert my 131MB Maxtor PCMCIA hard drive the driver for the hard drive installs properly. It appears in Device Manager's Hard Drve Controller section and is shown as having no conflicts and running properly. BUT, Win95 does not assign it a drive letter. It does not appear in Device Manager's Disk Drives section as it does on a properly operating system. I have another of the same Linksys devices in another comparable PC. I had difficulty getting it to work in that machine but the problem was related to resources (IRQ's). No such situation is present in the problem computer. Not only that, both machines show the same resources in use by the PCMCIA adapter and the Maxtor hard drive.

I have spoken to Linksys tech support but with no solutions. I have also removed and reinstalled the device several times forcing it to use various IRQs, etc.

The computer in question has and is using an IDE controller. In addition, the PCMCIA hard drive is being inserted in the slot after bootup into Win95.
