Question

VXPRO IDE Driver

Asked by: rcborreson

I just installed a new Amptron PM-8400A motherboard with a VXPRO chip set and AWARD BIOS.  Also installed 32Meg SDRAM, AMD K6 200, and three MAXDOR IDE hard drives (210 Meg, 340 Meg, and 1.6 Geg), MITASUMI 4X IDE CD-ROM drive. I am trying to install a Busmastering driver to reconize the dual on board VXPRO PCI IDE ports.  I downloaded a driver VXPROIDE.ZIP, extracted it, followed all instructions, only to find it does not reconize my CD-ROM Drive "L:".  I did notice a speed increase in accessing my Hard Drives.  I am currently using the Windows 95 default driver and all is working, but I would like the speed increase I noticed with the other driver.

try connecting the CD-ROM to the EIDE controller on the sound card, by moving it off the main EIDE bus you may be able to access it as normal & your other drives with the newer drivers.
The other option is to load real mode CD-ROM drivers (you won't notice any speed problems as it is only a 4x drive anyway) this will also loose a bit of conventional memory to the drivers. Hope this helps.
Did you try re-detecting your hardware or did it come up with an error about your CD-ROM?? Take a look in device manager.

My sound card has no IDE port it has a SCSI port.

I have not tried a real mode CD-ROM Driver.

Re-detecting did not work.  I tried this atleast half a dozen times with no errors it just didn't find it.

In the Device Manager it shows that have a CD-ROM when I boot with the standard Windows 95 Dual IDE Driver.  When I boot with the VXPROIDE Driver it detects nothing.

The VX chip set is manufactured by INTEL.

If the CD-ROM was already listed as present in the device manager before use of the driver, what is its status is in device manager after installing the new drivers.

by: rcborresonPosted on 1997-07-01 at 05:53:53ID: 1749145

After detecting with the standard driver, I change to the new driver and the CD-ROM ind the Device Manager is gone and my L:\ Drive disappears.

I am not totally sure which bulletin board I downloaded this Driver from (Award, Amptron, Intel, ect.),I think it was Amptron but I cant find it again.

Thanks

try the real mode drivers, you should not notice any performance problems with a 4x cd-drive

Thank You for your help, but I miss informed you on the Chipset. I told you it was an INTEL Chipset but it is a VXPro PCIchipset part number PC82C437VX and PC82438VX, manufacture is not known, that is installed on my Amptron Motherboard PM-8400A see  http://www.amptron.com/download.html . I sure this probably changes your answer you had earlier.

I have not yet tried the real mode driver yet.  Where do I install it at?

Again thanks for your assistance.

After installing your new ide drivers,
make sure config.sys has a cdrom driver, and AUTOEXEC.BAT has mscdex.exe in it
ie, config.sys:
device=cd_driver.sys /d:mscd0001
autoexec.bat:
\path_to\mscdex.exe /d:mscd0001
/d: =is for the most part, immaterial, AS LONG AS THEY ARE THE SAME IN BOTH.
(Some drives, like goldstar, prefer ALL CAPS IN BOTH LINES)
