Question

Display Driver for Compaq Presario 2100

Asked by: fgreene

Lost display resolution and color depth on Compaq Presario 2100.
Win95 Wizard defaults to standard VGA & 16 colors.

Need to restore original without restoring entire system.

Got nowhere with Compaq Technical Support (will not answer Email, 2 technicians could not provide correct procedure - or even name of driver).
Got nowhere with CYRIX (will not answer Email, no telephone support).

Please provide information on where to obtain a display driver for CYRIX MediaGX or the name of a fully compatible display driver or any alternative method for restoring the above without restoring the whole system.

Thank You for any Consideration that you can provide.

Your right... it is very difficult to find information about the Compaq 2001. The only FTP file that closely resembles some sort up upgrade is at:

http://www.compaq.com/support/files/2001.html

You might want to try and run this program and see if it gives you the correct drivers. Then you can go into the display properties in System Control Panel and try to update the driver.

The best thing to do is go to the Compaq website

http://www.compaq.com/athome/support/softpaq/consumer/pres2000/pres2100.html

I think there must be also a quickrestore cd with your machine, you better use that one, the boot disk can you find on the site

1. I have been at the Compaq site - no help
2. I do not want to do a quick restore - will reset to original state.
3. quick restore CD does not seem to have the appropriate driver, probably hidden in a Win95 CAB file.

I have tried http://www.jmcomputers.com/download/download.html
They will not let me download the driver - seems they discriminate against endusers!

Have you try to reinstall (if the drivers are still in the HDD, but are no longer registered).

Go to "Properties" of the Display and choose "change" in "Adapter" tab (that's in Advance properties), choose "Have Disk" then "Browse" and seek them in the follow directories:

C:\windows
C:\windows\systems

if they are still there there's should be no problem in that.

Or you can seek drivers in the following URLs

http://www.winfiles.com/
http://www.driverzone.com/

Go to where you can change the monitor adaptor and monitor type under the
preferences menu which you get when you right-click on the desktop. I
believe the tab is called "settings"
and there should be an button there to chang the display type located
beneath the resolution slide-scale. Click the button, and a new window will
 pop up.
Click on the top option to change the adaptor, and then click the radio
 button to "show all devices"
Scroll down, and choose the Cyrix Adaptor. If there are several, choose the
 first one.
Hit "ok" or "close" or whatever gets you back to the display choices.
Now go to the section located beneath the adaptor type, and try to find the
type of monitor that you have. (It should be there For me, it was a presario
 v400 color monitor.)

Note: If it asks you to insert a disk with the drivers on it, don't panic. Hit
Windows Key + F and search for the file that it is looking for (most likely in
 the windows/system directory)

When you have found it, remember where it is, and then close FIND. Use
the "browse" option to change to the directory that the file is located in.
After you do this, it should immedialtly let you know that you did it correctly,
as there will suddenly be options for 256 or more colors. If not, try the other
 Cyrix adaptors until it works.
