Question

How to install Windows 95 on an XP machine?

Asked by: Cam_Man595

I have a DOS program that is working on an old computer running Windows 95.  At some point that computer is going to fail and that will bring big problems so I am trying to bring it to a newer computer.  The computer I have is an XP machine.  I tried running the program in XP and that did not work properly.  I also tried installing 95 in Virtual Machine and using the program that way.  That did not work either.  Now I am trying to dual boot the machine with XP and 95.  I do not want to reinstall XP so I have installed GAG Boot Manager.  I have a 2GB partition formatted in FAT that I would like to put 95 on.  How do I install Windows 95 on that partition?

Won't work -- chipset too new and you almost certainly have too much memory.   What settings have you tried in the virtual machine?    '95 requires hardware virtualization be disabled to run correctly, but otherwise works fine in Virtual PC.   ... heading out the door and won't be back until late tonight => but if you provide more details we can probably get this working in a VM.

When I run it in the virtual machine the F1-F10 keys do not get into the program correctly.  If I press F3 I get "<".  I thought it might be because the program ran on a machine with an AT keyboard so I bought an AT to PS/2 adaptor but that did not help.  I am out of Ideas.  I hope you can help me.  I have asked this question in another question on EE.  So if you can help me, I will give you dredit for both questions.

Running in XP:   Have you messed around with the properties of the .exe shortcut to your dos program?
Attached is a screen shot of what I'm talking about.  You may just need to adjust max screen size and memory options to get it to work.

The program is called Ultrapath.  It is an old machine shop program.

You may want to try using a program called DOSBox. It is a emulator for DOS that will work on many operating systems including XP and Vista. Hopefully this will solve your issue.

Another solution would be to use Virtual PC from Microsoft or VirtualBox from Sun (both software packages are free). You can install Windows 95 on a virtual machine and should have no trouble running your software. The following links should help:

I hope this helps. Good luck.

There are ways around this although it doesn't always work.  If you right click on your program icon hopefully you will see a tab labeled "Compatability".  You can tweak the settings in this tab and try to get the program to work, but like I said - it doesn't always work.

Good Luck

Sorry - Right click and go to properties

by: Cam_Man595Posted on 2008-12-02 at 05:56:23ID: 23076807

I tried running it in all the differant compatability modes and it acted the same each time.

I tried DOSbox and I had trouble with it.  I don't remember what the trouble was so I'll try again.

I'll also try VirtualBox

Try checking the "Protected" option in the memory tab also

Here is another solution to try.

Open up Group Policy Editor by going to Start > Run > gpedit.msc

Go to User Configuration > AdministrativeTemplates > Start Menu & Taskbar

There will be an option labled "Add "Run in Separate Memory Space" check box to Run dialog box " Double click this and Enable it

Then run your program like shown in this diagram:

For me the option in the run command is automatically enabled and greyed out so you can't switch it, if this does or doesnt work you might want to disable and enable this feature as you need it

I tried DosBox again and remembered my problem.  The program uses a dongle on the printer port and in Dosbox I get a security violation.  I assume that it is not seeing the dongle.

by: Cam_Man595Posted on 2008-12-02 at 08:15:08ID: 23078231

Clicking protect memory did not help.

You said "Go to User Configuration > AdministrativeTemplates > Start Menu & Taskbar "

I don't see start menu & taskbar

by: andrew_aj1Posted on 2008-12-02 at 08:22:02ID: 23078329

Try using Virtual PC or VirtualBox with Win95 installed on it. It should let you access your dongle without issues.

Good luck.

When I try to install Win95 on Virtual Box it reads the floppy and hangs.

by: andrew_aj1Posted on 2008-12-02 at 10:08:21ID: 23079243

That is strange. Have you tried using Virtual PC? If it hangs on both you may have a bad floppy.

Here is another solution to try.

Open up Group Policy Editor by going to Start > Run > and type "GPEDIT.MSC" in the run box then hit enter

Go to User Configuration > AdministrativeTemplates > Start Menu & Taskbar
There will be an option labled "Add "Run in Separate Memory Space" check box to Run dialog box " Double click this and Enable it
Then run your program like shown in this diagram:
