The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

NTLDR error

Asked by Kri_Starheart in Windows 95 and 3.x

Main question first: I just restarted the very system I'm writing on now about ten minutes ago.  Received an NTLDR missing message, tapped to reboot, the line repeated three times when I remembered there was a disk in A.  Removed it, tapped again and win95 loaded (as expected).  I'm not a certified expert, but am fairly fluent in these things.  Should I be worried?

I had tried before the reboot to initialize some adjustments made to the SYSTEM.INI file which would have started up the sound card I have, but no lines were deleted when I saved.  Checking the bootlog, it showed that it failed to load (well, the soundcard drivers, first of all) the NDIS2SUP.VXD file, while it's still present on the main directory (C:\windows\system).  There was also and error loading MTRR (never heard of that before) in the bootlog.  These are the only errors out of the ordinary, and there were no screens or anything when win95 did load.

Should I use a memory recovery program in order to reinstall the old SYSTEM.INI?- and is it safe to turn my computer off in the meantime?

Also, I have two hard drives loaded, and recently learned how to make a boot disk and all.  I have a Full version of win98, and tried to format a spare drive, put in place of the other, and install it without a boot (relying on the BIOS).  Anyways, I get a line saying (Non-System Disk, replace and press any key" regarding the Hard Drive.  If that's not bad enough, that original BIOS won't respond to it's original disk, which I then had to move everything to another system in order to use it.  I was wondering, if I boot to DOS, can I select the formatted drive and install win98 onto it, and how would I exactly go about it?- I'm really rather petrified of after three weeks work just to get back online, of screwing everything up again ;p.
