After reinstalling Windows 95 and ME the logon screen, which earlier on proudly stood in a user's way, is now being skipped. The computer boots straight into a new default profile. How can I get the logon screen (asking for username and password) back, to display on every bootup?
I have tried all kinds of registry changes which I found on several forums and webpages, not without backing up first, but nothing so far did the trick.
How it all started?
I am currently fixing two computers for friends of mine who had viruses, spyware, and other problems.
After fixing the problems I also noticed that some essential files were corrupted, so I reinstalled the Operating Systems to replace faulty and insert missing ones. One Operating System was Windows ME, the other Windows 95.
Both Computers had already had profiles loaded with passwords to be entered on logon by the users.
With Windows ME, towards the end of the installation a screen asked me to enter a new username and a password. Since I didn't want to create another user, I left the default entries namely "Unnamed User" and "Unknown Password" unchanged.
Upon completion of the installation however the horror started. I realised that the machine now boots straight into the desktop, without the logon screen appearing first.
With both Operating systems there are no extra or new profiles visible which I can simply delete.
I spent hours searching on the Internet for a solution as to what I could do to get the logon screens back. I learnt lots about logon screens, including ways in which one can be prevented to simply bypass the logon screen by pressing cancel with Windows 95 and 98, but I still have not found an answer to this newest of my problems described above.
Please, if someone can help me I would be so grateful.
There is no network we are talking about here, it's just a number of user profiles with different user settings (i.e.: desktop settings etc.)
