Question

Unknown Device in Device Manager - Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System

Asked by: TICarson

Hello all,

I have just built a new computer using an ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard, Intel Q6600 CPU, 4GB G.skill RAM, (2) ASUS 7300GT video cards, 3 hard disk drives on a COMBOX driver swapper controller (This allows me to choose which drive to boot from). On drive (1) I have installed Windows 2003 Server and have it configured as a workstation (Perfect install and all devices recognized).  On drive (2) I have installed Windows XP Professional x64 (Problems here).  On Drive (3) I have installed Windows Vista x64 (Perfect install and all devices recognized).

My problem is with the intstallation on drive (2 - Windows XP Pro x64), everything installed and working with no problems, with the exception of 4 Unknown device lines in Device Manager.  When viewing devices by connection these 4 lines are listed under Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System.

In the properties for these drivers the details tab Device Instance Id shows the values "ACPI\GENUINEINTEL_-_EM64T_FAMILY_6_MODEL_15\_0", "ACPI\GENUINEINTEL_-_EM64T_FAMILY_6_MODEL_15\_1", "ACPI\GENUINEINTEL_-_EM64T_FAMILY_6_MODEL_15\_2" and "ACPI\GENUINEINTEL_-_EM64T_FAMILY_6_MODEL_15\_4" for each unknown device.  The Compatible Ids show value: ACPI\Processor.

When I boot into my Windows 2003 OS the driver details for the devices point to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\intelppm.sys" as the proper driver.  When in my Windows XP x64 OS I have the Unknown device question marks. There is also no registry entry for [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm].  The Windows 2003 install on drive 1 has a registry entry for this key.

All drivers have been downloaded and installed from the ASUS website and as stated above, everything seems to be working properly.  I just want to clear up the Unknown device question marks.  I think that the Q6600 processor driver is not being detected properly during the initial setup or after I load xp x64 SP2.

I have re-loaded the Windows XP Pro x64 OS three times.  I have been on the phone with Microsoft, ASUS and Intel with no help from either of these sources and have searched the internet for 2 days for solutions and/or a driver to solve this problem.  I have not installed any other software other than the OS.

Two questions:
(1) Does Windows XP Pro x64 support quad core processors?
(2) What harm will it be or what problems may occur going forward  if I just disable these devices and move on?.

I have tried all that I know and have searched forums, newsgroups, etc. with no success.  Please help.  I wanted to install/test both OSes as Windows XP Professional 32-bit does not recognize my 4GB of RAM.

Thanks much in advance.

To the best of my knowledge, ACPI is primarily a function of the BIOS, chipset drivers, and OS (supported CPU and other hardware required, of couse). Have you tried downloading the latest XP chipset drivers from nVidia site?

Yes I have gone to the nvidia website and downloaded the 8.43_nforce_650i_winxp64_english.exe.

Have you already installed any available updates for Windows?

You could also try running a repair install of Windows.  This way you'll still have any files or programs that you have installed, but you'll need to reinstall any Windows updates.

by: TICarsonPosted on 2007-09-20 at 17:39:43ID: 19932738

Yes I have installed all available updates from Windows update.  I also forgot to mention that I had to create a slipstream version of the installation cd because of a SATA drive issue with nvidia drivers not being loaded/installed during setup and being replaced by the microsoft driver(s).

Currently I have disabled the devices so that I am not prompted to install any drivers when I boot/reboot my PC, until I can find another solution (as stated in question 2).

Just out of curiosity, in device manager, open the COMPUTER icon up. What is listed under this for each seperate OS. Do they all have ACPI in there.

You have 3 operating systems installed, each would have there own device manager. Was that entry"-- ACPI Multiprocessor x64-based PC"  while you were in the problematic XP64 bit operating system?

by: TICarsonPosted on 2007-09-21 at 18:45:52ID: 19940226

Yes,

Remember I have a hard drive selector.  I have 3 OSes (1 each on each hard disk drive).  The other two OSes (Win2k3 Server/Workstation and Windows Vista x64) have detected all devices properly.  WinXP Pro x64 (Drive 2) is the only OS that I have the problem.

Does WinXP x64 properly work/detect a quad core processor?  Everything else is working properly.  The yellow ? marks in device manager are the only problem, well not really a problem.  I am entering this comment on the OS in question.

I am only trying to clear up the ? marks.  I currently have these 4 devices disabled.  I may have to just move on.  Since I started this question/thread, I have installed several MS Updates, MS Offices 2k3, UltraMon, Acronis TrueImage v10.0, IE7Pro, Java SRE, 7Zip.  All are working with no problems.

The MS Updates have not corrected anything.  There has to be an issue with the slipstream install and the intelppm.sys driver file.

Willcomp,

The information for KB article: 888399 seems to be the closest answer to my problem(s).  As stated in my last comment, I currently have these 4 devices disabled.  This problem is not stopping me from working on the WinXP x64 OS.

I have successfully installed all of my development tools, Acrobat software, Acronis TrueImage, etc.  This must be just a kludge problem with my Q6600 slipstream install.  The workstation is running fast and cool.

I am going to award you the points and move on.

Thanks for your/everyone's help.

You're welcome. Appears to be an annoyance and not a real problem.

I don't consider dismissing the problem as an annoyance without solving it to be much of a solution.

Before I reactivated my account, I'd hit the question using Google and Experts Exchange indicated that there was a solution available.  I was expecting something actually useful, not just to be told not to worry about the problem.
