32 bit versus 64 bit

I have never really understood 32 bit and 64 bit as it pertains to what one should have. Vista comes out in both 32-bit and 64-bit (I think by 1/2008). What would make me want to go with 64 bit and what would make me just stay with 32 bit. Don't you programs have to be 64 bit compatible?
