The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Need minidump help

Tags: microsoft, windows, windows 2003, blue screen
I am getting random blue screens on my Windows 2003 server and cannot recreate the blue screen.  I have debugged the minidump and cannot determine the cause.  My server is Windows 2003 - 64 bit, running SQL 2005 - 64 bit, within a ESX 3 virtual environment. Here is the bug check analysis:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high.  This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If a kernel debugger is available get the stack backtrace.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000060, memory referenced
Arg2: 0000000000000002, IRQL
Arg3: 0000000000000000, bitfield :
      bit 0 : value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
bit 3 : value 0 = not an execute operation, 1 = execute operation (only on chips which support this level of status)
Arg4: fffff8000108bd6b, address which referenced memory

The "OVERLAPPED_MODULE: Address regions for 'Cdfs' and 'imapi.sys' overlap" error sounds like it might be a hardware problem with your CD-Rom drive. You could possibly disable it and see if the problems occurs again.

I also recommend reading the following Microsoft Support KB...

Error message in Windows Server 2003: "Stop 0x0000000A (0x00000806, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804fd3aa) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910835/en-us

In other notes: The "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"  machine check exception occurs when Windows XP (and other Microsoft platforms) and your hardware platform cannot recover from a hardware error so that the system can continue to run successfully and reliably. More specific diagnosis of machine check exceptions is difficult, and there is no general solution.

Thanks for the links and the comment Mwecomputers.  However, this VM guest does not have any CD-roms connected to it and I have unfortunately already gone down that KB article.  But thanks again for the attempt!

After working with VMware, they had me recreate the VM and reattach the VMDK file.  It was their belief that the VM's configuration file was somehow corrupt.  We have not had a Blue Screen since recreating the vmx file.
