Question

Vista 64 not seeing 8GB of ram fitted, only sees 4

Asked by: ezzil

Vista 64 only shows 4GB ram and not the 8 fitted. I have googled this and apparently I have to set memory mapping in the bios but cannot find this option in the Award Bios.

How much RAM does your motherboard support?

by: rabioPosted on 2008-06-12 at 16:59:13ID: 21774664

well his motherboard, the XFX 790i Ultra, supports Up to 8GB of DDR3 2000/1600/1333MHz memory
Dual Channel architecture. SO the only thing I can think of is he's using two different frequencies in the slots or one of the ram is fried.

matching 4 sticks bought at same time all brand new. As rabio says, supports upto 8 gig. will try memtest on the ram and report back.

by: PUNKYPosted on 2008-06-12 at 19:22:09ID: 21775280

What is max of mem on each slot that motherboard specs called out? You should check manual to sort this out.

try to look for Beta bios releases that support remapping

by: PCBONEZPosted on 2008-06-13 at 00:15:54ID: 21776566

If the board takes low density and you have high density modules that would explain this.

by: ezzilPosted on 2008-06-13 at 02:23:02ID: 21777151

I suppose the main question is: Is there a place in the bios that allows for memory mapping that I have just not found? Ta for the responses guys.

by: PCBONEZPosted on 2008-06-13 at 11:40:59ID: 21781628

I'm not an expert on that one but it seems to me that kind of memory mapping is all done in the OS.
[As in the BIOS only maps the first 1MB(??) it needs for it's own use.]

If that were not true then reverting from a 64-bit Windows OS back to a 32-bit version wouldn't revert you back to the 32-bit/4GB limit on RAM.

If I'm out in left field let me know guys.

got service pack 1, and vista is seeing 4gig not 3.5gig. i keep reading that it is a bios setting but cannot find the setting in the bios. This is the help I require I think. How do I set memory mapping in the award bios?

by: jsthursdayPosted on 2008-06-15 at 14:49:04ID: 21789831

oh , i understand now. well you go into bios, then settings, then memory settings. check this out.
http://www.pcplus.co.uk/tutorials/hardware/optimise_your_bios
it may show you how to optimize the whole thing, but basically just look for something called physical memory and change that to auto i believe it is. good luck!
