Thanks graye, you were in the right general direction, but I actually had found the cause on my own since last night..just haven't been able to come back here until now to post what I found.
Tunrs out to be a known problem with the Linksys model I am using (wireless) WRVS4400N. There is no real 100% solution yet that I have found but at least I know the cause. I also found a temporary fix by resetting (unplug then replug). I may need to change the brand/model as there doesn't seem to be a solution yet from Linksys.

This sounds more like a network hardware (or configuration) problem. Consider a "noisy" network connection... that would explain why smaller packets make it thru (since a few retries would be acceptible), but larger files (that generate the same proportional number of errors) exceed the maximum number of retries and then quit.
I'd be looking at NICs, cables, hubs, routers, etc...
Tell us more about the hardware (particluarly if this is a wireless network on the edge of its range)
