Vista for Dummies

Just got a new vista 64 machine. Trying to load all my software and configure it well. Running into all the usual problems with vista. Need best vista for dummies resources. Specifically, how do I know the reason why vista does not permit a program to launch or does not permit a port to be opened or does not permit a program to install. Does Vista keep a log of all these refusals so I can know what is happening. It seems that the programs simply refuse to work or to open or to install but I don't know why and there is no where to go to find out with vista. Seems so hit an miss some work others do not. No clear way to tell what I need to do to get th programs working.  Help.

Thanks! Those look helpful. While we are discussing broad questions with respect to Vista, let me ask you if you have a structured approach to troubleshooting that you always follow when you encounter a problem with an OS, or you know of someone who has done a flow diagram showing how they approach problem solving narrowing it down options and focusing, etc. I feel I waste too much time just figuring out where to start with Vista.

So I have found several places that keep a log of problems but the problems I encounter do not always end up registering a problem in these places.
1. Problem Reports & Solutions.
2. Event Viewer under Computer Management service.
3. Windows LogsMike's Personal Account
I sill notice that I am missing some items out of these logs that tells me something has gone wrong with an installation.
