Question

Class not registered error on Vista Home 64-bit, how do I solve this?

Asked by: pcumberbatch

1 - I get a Class not registered message when attempting to open explorer.exe - same occurs in safe mode
2 - Attempts to run control panel give a 'Bad Image' error and says that C:\Windows\system32\ExplorerFrame.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
3 - Clicking on the windows update available notice in the quick launch bar yelds a Class not registered message with the registry keys displayed in the message ::{26ee0668-a00a-44d7-9371-beb064c9863}\5\::{36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8}
4 - Using restore points is not resolving the issue and I am sure that these points are long before the error occured as I use the system every day.

have you tried inserting the Windows disk and doing a repair?

by: pcumberbatchPosted on 2009-09-19 at 06:51:21ID: 25373060

The windows disk offers me a reinstall. I was hoping to do an inplace upgrade but that option was not available. The option to upgrade was also unavailable as it considered the version on the disk to be older than the one on the system.

Have you tried running the Vista file checker?  'sfc /scannow.  Start-->Search-->sfc

Ok I tried that. The scan reported - Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

The explorerframe.dll file does show a mismatch. I really can't figure out what to do next. I zipped and attacjed the file since it is huge.

"he option to upgrade was also unavailable as it considered the version on the disk to be older than the one on the system." - this can be solved by creating a dvd with vista sp2 on it. There are manuals available on the web.

Thanks McKnife. I was trying to avoid SP2 for the moment but I've decided to give it a try and see what happens. I'll update as soon as I have results one way or another.

by: McKnifePosted on 2009-09-21 at 15:40:10ID: 25388319

Ah, that means your current system is on SP1? Well then integrate SP1 if you are afraid of SP2. The integration process manual is also still available online.

by: pcumberbatchPosted on 2009-09-25 at 10:48:06ID: 25425331

I downloaded SP2 but it was not bootable. So I installed from inside of windows and I still have the same problem. I checked and my machine boots form CD before it boots from the hard drive plus the SP1 CD I have is boots fine.  I must have missed something.

by: McKnifePosted on 2009-09-25 at 11:11:21ID: 25425600

So now your on SP2. Now do a repair install from within windows from a dvd with sp2 integrated.

by: pcumberbatchPosted on 2009-09-25 at 11:23:34ID: 25425738

Ok, I'll have to check on how to integrate SP2. The download I have is from MS but I saw no repair options the first time I ran it. I thought that it was supposed to be an integrated copy since they said it could be used for a fresh install or to update an existing one.

To make sure you know what I'm talking about: a slipstreamed installation DVD. Vista setup with SP2 already in it. How to should be somewhere here: http://www.google.com/search?q=slipstream+vista+sp2&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1
Download (legal) here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/04/29/windows-vista-with-sp2-rtm-slipstreamedintegrated-dvd-iso-image-bt-download/

Thanks I'll check those out in a bit and give it a whirl.

by: pcumberbatchPosted on 2009-09-28 at 06:21:42ID: 25439066

None of the slipstream files I saw are for Vista Home. As for doing it myself I don't want to capture an image of a bum system. I don't have another machine with the same config to work with so I am currently stuck.

by: pcumberbatchPosted on 2009-10-01 at 06:27:00ID: 25468365

OK. I solved the problem.

I got a copy of the ExplorerFrame.dll from someone running Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I booted to my Linux partition and replaced the file in the System32 folder.
Curious thing is why is a core OS component on a 64 bit system running from a folder called System32? - Is it that they didn't upgrade Explorer to 64-bit?

Thanks for all the help everyone, I will review and see what will happen regarding points.
