Hi All,

4 Procesors means 4 physical CPU`s. If you do not have a Server ( and 4CPU`s is quite bigh the server ) then more then shure you do not have 4 Procesors. Search the interntt for the CPU that is written in computer proerties and you will see what you have.

What do you meen function how they should? If the computer is from a brand company evry company has hardware monitoring tool that tells you if the hardware is ok or not.

Thanks all for you helpful comments.  I will look into these more as soon as I get home tonight.

BYTV:
It is an HP pavilion Elite (I forgot the model...something like e9120Y, but not sure about the order of those numbers)
The guy at the store told me it had 4 processors of 2.6 ghz each (but I am still skeptical that he didn't mean 1 processor with 4 cores).  It has a terabyte hard drive, 64 bit system with 8 gigs memory (with Vista of course).
Some things it is super fast at, and other things that were slow on my old computer, are still almost as slow on my new one...My old one had a 2.5ghz processor and is about 4 years old...(and I'm not meaning like download time for files or web pages).  I don't know how the 4 processors (or cores) all work together, but I just want to make sure they are all working when and how they are supposed to at the potential they were designed to work.

I should have mentioned all that in my original question in case it made a difference on the software I should use to check the processors.

Anyway...thanks again for all the comments.  I will check into them tonight...

:-)

It's normal that not all programs are working faster. The program must be able to use all four processors/cores. (Not all programs are ready for this.)
So some programs will run only on a single (2.6 Ghz) core and will not have much benefit of the 4 cores installed.
Can you give an example of some programs that are not working faster. Maybe there exists a newer version of it that support multi-threading? (= enables the use of more than on processor to do it's job)

HP pavilion Elite  from the interenet seams to be a Desktop computer so I am more then shure that you do not have 4 CPU`s :) if it is not a server..
Check Specs:
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do;HHOJSID=N1pFK12dMwZ4K9Q241LWF3MnhD2QpwTSv6Kf1zGj1HWXrqv4TYtm!620608899?storeName=computer_store&category=desktops&a1=Brand&v1=HP+Pavilion+Elite&series_name=e9150t_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/desktops/HP_Pavilion_Elite/e9150t_series

Processor  Choices:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-920 processor (2.66GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache with QPI Technology)
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-950 processor (3.00GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache with QPI Technology)

To see what is happening when you start a Application Open Task Manager  and go to Performance.. you will see all the cores of the Quad core CPU how much are used

Thanks everyone!
Thanks 3 S and Bvtv for that extra information.  I just got home really late so I'm not gonna get to try anything yet...I am gonna split the points and close the question.  I have enough info here and learned a good bit.  I can try these things out maybe tomorrow night instead...

Thanks everyone.   You've all been excellent help!
