Question

How to deploy printer using GPO from W2K3 R2 x64

Asked by: Giraffe_UK

Hi There,

I have a single domain.com, running 3x DC W2K3 x86 and member server W2K3 R2 x64 running as file and print server.
I would like to take advantage of deploying printer via GPO, now included on Print Management on W2K3 R2 x64.
If I try to deploy a printer using Print Management from W2K3 R2 x64, I receive the following error:

Deploying printer connection '\\servername\printername' to per user GPO 'gpo_name' failed. The specified directory service attribute or value does not exist.

It seems that I need to run adprep to update my schema master, am I right to say that?  I would like to make sure the process runs smoothly.

So from PDC I did:

repadmin /replsum /bysrc /bydest /sort:delta
All domain controllers show 0 in fails columns.

What should be my next step?
Run adprep /forestprep  from which box? W2K3 x86 or W2K3 R2 x64?

Thanks for your help.

For member server you don't require schema to be updated.
Schema has only to be updated when you have DC in windows 2003 & want to introduce ADC of windows 2003 R2.

the Active Directory Schema commutability:

win2k  -        13
win2k3 -       30
win2k3 R2 - 31
win2K8 -       44
win2K8 R2 - 47

Go thorough below link with GUI for deploying printer.

You do need to upgrade the schema to R2 (31) in order to deploy printers via GPO, so really this means that you need to have an R2 server running as a DC, as you need to use the Print Management console on an R2 DC.

Deploying printers via GPO is something that has been added to AD in R2, therefore AD needs to be upgraded to R2 to allow this.

The link provided by awinish explains this.

Yes bluntTony is right, you have to upgrade your dc to windows 2003 R2 or windows 2008.

Thanks Awinish and bluntTony.

Just to make sure I got it right.
Can I leave member server (print server) as it is and upgrade only one DC to 2003 R2?

Thanks,
Giraffe

Yes you can do that. Then you use the Print Management console on the R2 DC but use it to manage your existing print server and deploy printers from that printer server.

More info on the management console : http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Managing-Printers-Windows-Server-2003-R2.html
