Question

Windows 7 & Vista File Sharing

Asked by: techpronetwork

I have a network of several PCs. My primary machine runs Vista and has several shares on it. These shares can be accessed through a Win XP machine, but not through a Windows 7 machine. When I try to access with Win 7, I get a permissions error.Vista can access shares on XP and vice versa. I can remote desktop from any machine to any machine. It seems my only real problem is the Win 7 to Vista issue. I can even access XP shares from Win 7. I thought it was related to Homegroup or something, but I don't think so now.

All the usual suspects  I can think of (firewalls, workgroups, etc) have been disabled or configured consistently with no success.  I have seen some people with this problem, but not much by way of solutions. Unless, this is really stupid human error like firewall or misspelling, which is always possible, I am not sure what it could be.

Are the local account names and passwords the same on the Vista machine with the shares and the W7 Client PC?

Yes the user names and passwords are exactly the same, which I was hoping that wasn't necessary, but nevertheless they are all same and it doesn't help.

Which PC did the "Workgroup" which you are using exist on first?  I have experienced a similar issue with XP Pro Worgroups.

Try this - (if you have not already):-

1/ Create a new Workgroup/Homegroup name on the W7 Machine using the "Administrator" account (rather than another which is in the local admin group) - (if W7 still uses "Administrator" as the primary admin account name - I must confess I have yet to use it!)

2/ Then using the named Administrator account on the XP/Vista machines change the Workgroup name to this new name

3/ Reboot the W7 and log on with an admin account which shares a common user name and password with the XP/Vista machines

4/ Reboot the others after joining them to the new Workgroup and then check if your shares can be accessed across the network from/to each member of the group

Hope this helps.

Perhaps it is an admin policy setting.  This page describes a problem on sharing between Vista and Win7, not the same as yours, but perhaps reading the thread will give you an idea:

Now, I can see and acces anything in the public folders from W7, just not other drives. I guess I need to understand creating shares better.

What acrion did you take to be able to see the files?  Can you summarise the changes you have made.

When you say:-

"Now, I can see and acces anything in the public folders from W7, just not other drives. "

Are the other drives you are trying to accesed "Shared " by you (and you have given the shares names) or are you trying to access the drives via the default admin shares (e.g. C$, Admin$ etc)?

Have you tried browsing by IP address? Can you resolve machine names when you ping with /a ? I have found that in any workgroup environment, as oppose to a doimain environment, machines can take a while to identify one another via computer names. in these situations I would use the run command and type \\IPADDRESS\SHARE instead of \\HOSTNAME\SHARE.

Also try resetting the winsock (on  from command prompt type "netsh winsock reset catalog" for some reason vista seems to rely on this for lots of features like the sidebar as well as network browsing. no doubt 7 is as reliant on this service as vista. I have cured browsing issues with a winsock reset before.

As a last resort you could try installing the IPX protocol on the machines. this is part of the netbeui protocol. Realisticly you shouldn't have to and TCP/IP should work but if installing that fixes the issue perhaps its a problem with the TCP stack.

"Are the other drives you are trying to accese "Shared " by you (and you have given the shares names) or are you trying to access the drives via the default admin shares (e.g. C$, Admin$ etc)?"

I've done both. Also, I have tried the \\ipaddress\share method and received the same permissions error. I tried to run the netsh cmd but I get a higher elevation required message.I did it through my admin account.  I haven't tried the IPX protocol yet. I real close to going another way, like a NAS or moving shares to XP

It's a shoot in the dark here's a couple more things to try.

Turn off UAC
1. Go to Start Menu > Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > User Account
2. Click on Change User Account Control settings
3. Move the bar to the lowest point, Never Notify
4. Reboot then test

Use MSconfig to turn off all startup items
1. Type in msconfig in the start search bar
2. Click on the Startup tab and then click on Disable all
3. Click on the Services tab check the box to "Hide all Microsoft services" then click Disable all
4. Reboot then test

As a last ditch option try doing a fresh install of win7

good luck,
tenaj

This problem resolved itself out of the blue on the Vista side. Maybe a patch Tuesday kind of thing. All of the sudden, it worked. I tend to think it was a Vista problem, because I still see weird network problems especially with file and print sharing in Vista. Also, a week or so after I posted this, the problem was intermittent on all of my machines accessing this Vista machine. I am going back to a dedicated file server because I can't take the quirkiness of f & p shares.

Incidentally, I did update to RC1 but the problem was fixed before that.

Thanks For the input.
