Thanks nobus, I worked through that thread. Unfortunately it applies to Vista. I don't have Hotfix KB929777 on my Windows 7 installation.
Also searched for the registry keys mentioned there. they don't exist either.

Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI get the above error code, which sounds suspiciously generic, when trying to run Windows Update for Windows 7 Beta.
There's a lot of discussion about this mostly in reference to Vista. I read one post which indicated that systems with 4GB of RAM were prone to this error.
Ran the Update trouble shooter to no avail.
Any ideas?
My specs: AMD 6000 processor, 8GB RAM, 64-bit Windows 7 build 7000.

You could try deleting the contents of the directory containing windows updates, one may have failed to download and has become corrupted. I am not infront of my 7 PC but on a vista one I have here its in the following DIR
c:\windows\software distribution\WuRedir\
Delete the alphanumerically named directories in there and try again.
Hope that helps
Sounds like a good idea Robert and it might have worked so I'm awarding you the points.
I was about to ask for this Q to be closed.
I've removed Windows 7 and deleted the image I had of it, so I can't test your theory.
My two Vista installations perform very well and after using Windows 7 for a few weeks I've concluded that it's nothing more than Vista SP2 - Vista the way it should have been originally.
I'm not prepared to pay for a marginally faster boot time but I'm an incorrigible upgrader so I've removed temptation.

Here is the answer to your problems. Go to your control panel under add and remove programs you will see a hot fix for kb929777. Uninstall this hot fix. Windows will tell you to reboot, do it. Download the kb929777 for the windows website not the auto update site, (if you do it will install the hot fix first before the kb929777 and then kb929777 will not install again). After successful update you will need to reboot. check for updates( there should be none and your history should show successful update on the kb929777. I also took out 3 gb of mem. before I did this but before it would still not download until I removed the hot fix, so I DO NOT KNOW IF YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE MEM. FIRST. But try it with the mem. in first and it may save you a step
