Try booting and installing Win 7 off the USB stick, instead of installing it from XP.

Boot from the USB drive and follow setup, format the drive and you will be able to install properly just make sure you BACKUP all your stuff first.... but you'll be good as gold when you install it.

See there, they also asking for bootsect.exe

"J:  (Drive letter of Windows 7 iso mounted with demon tool)
CD boot
bootsect /nt60 Y: (Y is drive latter of your USB drive )"

by: tenaj-207Posted on 2009-05-27 at 22:02:36ID: 24489848

You have to download the 32 bit version of the bootsect file. (http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/Windows-7/download.aspx) and use the file from that ISO. Then go back to your 64 bit version.

Also you can't upgrade to Win 7 from XP 32 bit or 64 bit.  There is no upgrade path unless you want to upgrade to Vista then to Win 7.

by: Andy1988Posted on 2009-05-27 at 22:59:48ID: 24490043

I haven't asked for upgrade, I want a new installation.

So for making the USB Drive bootable, I need to download 32 bit Windows 7(2.5 GB again?) :(

by: Blizz127Posted on 2009-05-27 at 23:28:53ID: 24490161

Nope that tutorial just click 64bit and it'll download the 64bit you don't NEED to have the 32 bit windows 7 ;)

by: Andy1988Posted on 2009-05-27 at 23:52:09ID: 24490267

But, I have Win XP 32 bit currently & a 64 application (bootsect.exe) won't run on XP 32 bit.

by: tenaj-207Posted on 2009-05-28 at 10:56:11ID: 24495961

I don't know for sure if that program is a 32bit or a 64bit program, but from your posting and others it sounds like it is 64bit, unless you download the 32bit Win 7 OS.

To avoid having to download the whole 32bit Win7 DVD try downloading this file, http://www.2shared.com/file/2585881/5ad9ef68/bootsect.html.  It's from the Vista OS but hopefully it's the same 32bit program you need.
