Windows 7 VPN connection fails
I have a copy of windows 7 RC1 installed and I cannot seem to get the vpn to work. I am using the builtin vpn software to try and establish a pptp vpn to our windows 2003 server. I know the server is fine as all other clients (vista and xp) can connect fine.
but from the windows 7 machine it makes it the verifying username and password and fails with either error 619 or error 803.
I have tried disabling the firewall completely on the windows 7 machine but I still get the same error
if I look at the event log it shows 3 events
event 20223
the user %username%
successfully established a link to the Remote Access Server using the following device:
Server address/Phone Number = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Device = WAN Miniport (PPTP)
Port = VPN3-1
MediaType = VPN.
event 20224
The link to the Remote Access Server has been established by user %username%
event 20227
the user %username% dialed a connection named Office which has failed. The error code returned on failure is 806.

deleting the account and re-creating it does not work. does windows 7 try to use a different port for some reason? I can connect successfully to my server if I am inside our firewall. but I can't seem to from outside of it. Yet all none windows 7 computers can connect fine from outside

this makes no sence. my firewall does not show any event from the IP of the computer I am trying to connect to. a netstat -an on the computer shows only port 1723 and it shows it as established and if I look at the logs on my remote access server it has logged the following event

The most common cause for this is that a firewall or router between the VPN server and the VPN client is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packets (protocol 47). Verify that the firewalls and routers between your VPN server and the Internet allow GRE packets. Make sure the firewalls and routers on the user's network are also configured to allow GRE packets. If the problem persists, have the user contact the Internet service provider (ISP) to determine whether the ISP might be blocking GRE packets.

As soon as I changed the VPN type from Automatic to PPTP my problem went away.

Delete the account and create a new VPN connection in your Windows7. Check if still the problem persists.
