Question

Windows 7 - "There is no email program associated..." when syncing thunderbird

Asked by: XIInator

I am currently running Windows 7 RC1 64bit on my system. I have been using BirdieSync and Thunderbird with no problems whatsoever before Windows 7. Now, it works fine in Windows 7, I can synchronize and all that jazz without a hitch. The problem that I do have is that whenever I connect my SmartPhone via USB (or Bluetooth) I would get the following pop-up:

"There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

I would click 'ok', the box would go away, and then Thunderbird would launch and it would synchronize without a problem.

It is just annoying to have to navigate to the window and click 'ok' each and every time.

I did try setting the defaults in the Default Programs control panel and it is indeed set to Thunderbird. I had found a similar post to which there was a "solution" as to where I install Thunderbird first before installing WMDC. I had done that as well already, all to no avail, the no default email box still pops up. Any ideas how to get rid of this annoying message each time I connect the phone?

Thanks for any advice!

Not sure how to confirm in 7, but I would go through the Windows settings to confirm that any type of email association is set to TB.
Apparently, the Sync program is calling something that Win7 doesn't recognize as associated to an email program, except once past OK, it works properly.

Can you be a little more specific? Are you stating I should check the file types and associations manually to see if there's anything there that's not being associated with Thunderbird?

Yes, but unsure of how to do in Win 7.
If XP, I would tell you to go to Windows Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->File Types and then go through the list. Anything that has to do with ANY type of Email, set it to TB.
Also, if 7 is like xp, Find the Set Program Access and Defaults and confirm that TB is set there as well, for Address Books, Email, I'm guessing whatever you are trying to sync.
I'm sure there is something in the syncing that also needs to be set to TB, but  I don't use it.
Does your smartphone have Updated software for Win 7?

I looked through filetypes and checked all the unknown and didn't see anything that could have anything to do with filetypes.

If you read my last paragraph in my first post, I did try the default programs route as well, but it doesn't make a difference.

The only things I sync are: Address book, calendar, and tasks. I don't bother with emails.

Well, I mean since Windows 7 hasn't technically been fully released, there may be software conflicts, which you seem to be experiencing. Obviously, you are getting this annoying pop-up which is pointless, because once you OK past it, everything seems to work properly, so whatever software is trying to run when you plug in your smartphone is causing this error.

wmdhost.exe  appears to belong to Windows Mobile Device Center.  Perhaps that software isn't 64 Bit compatible, perhaps it isn't Win 7 ready.
Found a few posts regarding these two programs but not exactly the same situation you describe. Perhaps MS hasn't tested it yet.
