Question

Right-Click Computer / Manage Does not work

Asked by: lrmoore

Windows 7 build 7600 (RTM)
Fresh install from fdisk/format
When I first installed it, I could right-click on My Computer on the desktop and select Manage - just like XP/Vista
Now, I get an error message
X  This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. please install a
program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default programs control
    panel.

Default programs list does not show Computer Management, naturally.
I created a desktop shortcut to it and it works fine, just not from the right-click/manage option.
Anyone know how to restore the link to the right-click menu?

Have you tried the system file checker?  Type CMD.EXE in the search dialog box at the bottom of the Start Menu, then Ctrl, Alt and Enter to run as Administrator.   Then  type SFC  /SCANNOW at the DOS prompt and hit Enter.

Ran the SFC and it did not fix it. Will reboot shortly and see if that helps.

Try downloading and installing CCleaner and run a registry scan to see what it picks up.

Did you modify any MMC Snapins when you customized your install?

by: lrmoorePosted on 2009-08-12 at 07:13:52ID: 25078913

Reboot didn't fix it after SFC
CCleaner fixed 46 registry issues, but the problem remains
I did not knowingly modify any snapins. i just did a basic install, ran all the windows updates, installed a couple programs.
Everything else works just fine.

  Hi there lrmoore,,,

First of all please make sure your user ID is a Local Admin.

secondly please perform the following tests and suggestions :

1- on the command prompt and type the following command (compmgmt.msc) if the Computer Management is displayed  it is OK .

2- Do the following to check if the computer management  is not disabled

on the command prompt type "regedit" then
Find HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft
> Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer

Then check in the right Pane if  you can find "NoManageMyComputerVerb"  ???
if it is not you can create it by :
-Right-click the right pane
-Select New
-DWORD value
- Then call it "NoManageMyComputerVerb"  then set the value to "0"

3- For more information please check these similar cases :

1. Yes. Command line brings up Computer management
2. Polices/Explorer key did not exist. I created the key, then added the DWORD value

No luck.
Thanks for trying!

I notice that the location/path it is calling does not even exist
C:\ProgramData|Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu . . . .

C:\ProgramData directory does not exist...

How can I edit the link/path that it is looking for?

by: ecsrdPosted on 2009-08-12 at 21:56:49ID: 25085525

Can you browse to the folder in Windows Explorer - type the whole thing out and hit enter to do this, don't expect it to auto-populate.  That IS the correct folder, and I'm thinking one of 2 things has happened, either your security permissions on the folder have become messed up, or somehow the folder was deleted.  If you cannot access the folder, one of the two has happened.

by: ecsrdPosted on 2009-08-12 at 22:00:06ID: 25085538

If you can reach the folder by browsing the path as suggested, its most likely a permissions problem and you'll need to correct that.

The correct settings are:
Allow <your account name> Special Permissions(* see at the bottom which permissions you require)
Allow SYSTEM Full control
Allow Administrators Full control
Allow Users Read & execute
Allow Everyone Read & execute

*<your account name>'s special permissions are:
Delete subfolders and files
Delete

Thanks to everyone who posted. This was the closest I got before I bit the bullet and just re-installed. I was having some other little niggling issues, too.

I've just spotted this problem after joining a PC with a virgin install of build 7600 to a domain.

I've two identical Acer Veriton 7800's one at home one at work and have taken the plunge and installed Windows 7 Ultimate on both.  The home PC works fine but since joining the work PC to the work domain I have the same issue.  On the server I setup a global security group called LocalAdmin with my user login as a member then add this group to the Local Administrators group on the local PC but this does not fix the issue.  Adjusting file permissions does not seem to work either I right-click on C:\ProgramData and add my user, 'GS\ADW' giving full controll but still the same.  If I send a Computer Management shortcut to the desktop it open fine.

Am I going to find lots of these little opportunities to waste hours in Windows 7?
