Windows 7 - Internet Explorer Certificate Error
Hi All
Hoping someone can assist me with this relatively odd problem.
Basically I have a cert which lets me access a certain website. Up until a few days ago that cert worked fine.
3 days ago the hard-drive on my pc died and had to replace it. With a fresh install of Windows 7 (Release Candidate) using Internet Explorer and a newly generated cert by the website owners, I can no longer access it.
From what I can see it is an issue with Internet Explorer 8 not being able to see the certificate.
For example, I can go into the "Personal" Certificate store through the windows certificate manager (start > run > certmgr.msc), however in the same section in Internet Explorer, I cannot see this certificate.
Operating System: Windows 7 RC (Fully Up-to-date)
Browser: Internet Explorer 8
I had this working the last time so I am a little confused as to why its not working th9is time
I would appreciate if there is anyone that can assist me in this regard!

Cool, have you imported it within IE8?
ASKER
Well ive gone into Certificates in Internet Explorer 8, Personal, import and selected the cert. It advises me that the import was successful, however nothing shows up in the Certificate list so im a little confused by it all
Hmm, have you restarted IE8?
What is the location of the saved Cert?

ASKER
yep, restarted it, tried it under a different account, deleted the certs and tried again.
None of that worked.
Just tried to import it into firefox and it tells me that "The certificate could not be verified"
As per attached screenshot.
Also when I go into the certificate before importing it tells me "Windows does not have enough information to verify this certificate" so I am assuming this is what is causing the issue.

Hi Michael
Not the cert anyway, cert works fine on a laptop that I have here aswell.
Its somed to do with Windows or IE I would imagine.
Paranormastic:
- Root cert shouldn't be needed for this one. 5 or 6 other pc's in the office have it installed without the root and it works fine.
- No red x in certification path.
- Time on OS and BIOS are the same
- CRL Distribution Point Location: Doesnt seem to be accessible via a web-browser, same on the other working pc's.
- They have issued with me a couple of new certs all of which get the same error.
Its looking like the cert store might be corrupt after my investigation last night.

done a fresh build of winows 7, currently working off the fresh build and I get the same issue.
very very odd.

Found out that the issue was the Root CA and intermediate CA. Basically made the mistake of assuming that because you could import a cert without the root ca/intermediate ca in windows xp that you could do the same in Windows 7 and use it, which apparently you can't.
Thanks for the assist! Hopefully these points are split correctly ;)

I can see the Certificate by going to
Start > run > certmgr.msc
It is sitting in the "Personal" Certificate store
However when I open up Internet Explorer 8, and go to
Internet Options > Content > Certificates
It is not in the Personal store.
Make sense?
