Question

Can't Play Retail DVD Movies

Asked by: Idle_Mind

I have an HP Pavilion dv7-1150us Laptop running a CLEAN install of 64-bit Windows 7 Professional RTM (Activated):
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01555848&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=ob-68909-2&os=2100&product=3795415&lang=en

I cannot play any Retail DVD Movies on the system.  When I try to browse to the DVD drive in Windows Explorer with a DVD Movie in the drive it simply Ejects it and tells me to put a disc in.

The system can read CDs and Data DVDs.

All updates have been installed and Windows Update is happy.  Additionally, there are no "yellow" entries in my Device Manager.

I installed VLC Media Player and that didn't help either:

I beleive that's an HP OEM CDROM drive.. that's probably been rebranded by another vendor.  I'd suggest that you go to your vendors website to see fi there is a firmware update for the drive.

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-26 at 14:44:52ID: 25192588

Thanx graye,

Hardware is not my strong suit.  =\

Here is the HP site for the drivers...can't see anything related to the drive:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2100&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3795415

I installed the "Lightscribe System Software" entry but that didn't help.

Unless it is part of one of the other installs?  What should I be looking for?  A DVD Drive Driver?...or a Controller Driver?  I can't figure out who originally made the thing either.

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-26 at 15:00:39ID: 25192733

I also did a CLEAN 32 bit Win 7 Pro install on my wife's laptop (Toshiba Satellite M105-S3004) and it plays DVDs fine so I think that suggests an improper device driver for my DVD Drive on my system?

I have Zune and iTunes (thus QuickTime as well) on this system...could those have installed some kind of video codecs that messed something up?

by: grayePosted on 2009-08-26 at 15:16:03ID: 25192847

Most of the time the CDROM is rebranded by some other vendor... like Dell, Gateway, etc.   So, you typically wouldn't find the upgraded firmware on the OEM's web site.   Instead you'd find in on the Vendor's web site.

Who made your PC?

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-26 at 15:34:07ID: 25192955

It's an HP (Hewlett Packard)...follow my previous links.  ;)

by: grayePosted on 2009-08-26 at 16:35:27ID: 25193349

Ooops, my bad.

You're right... I can't find a firmware update for that drive on the HP site

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-26 at 18:09:25ID: 25193763

Yeah...and of course the original discs that came with the laptop are for restoring it to the manufacturer state w/ Vista on it...can't just grab the drivers straight off them.  =(

I'll keep searching...thanks for stopping by my question.  =)

Have you checked the region settings of the DVD player and the Discs you are trying to play?

by: MeretePosted on 2009-08-28 at 04:08:34ID: 25206370

Must be related to the video drivers.
There's a combination of things to play DVD video,
directx
graphics
direct draw which VLC uses
as a quick idea install ffdshow and see what happens
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ffdshow
Do you have WMP or a dvd decoder such as Power DVD?

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-28 at 10:43:36ID: 25209930

WMP is installed as part of the OS...see my screenshot in the original description above.  =)

I do NOT have any third-party DVD applications installed.

I installed ffdshow from:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/

But that didn't help either.

In WMP, the menu item for DVDs under the Play menu is greyed out.
In Windows Media Center it tells me that no DVD was found in the drive.
Drive is still ejected when I double click it in Windows Explorer.

Tried deleting the Drive in Device Manager and letting Windows reinstall it after Reboot...didn't work.

I think I'll just have to wait for HP to update their Driver for Windows 7?

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-28 at 11:09:23ID: 25210160

Tried  K-Lite Codec Pack Full 5.0.5:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/K-Lite_Codec_Pack_Full_d4844.html

That didn't work either.

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-28 at 15:16:09ID: 25211983

Screw ball indeed...  ;)

So you are making an analogy of the HP Printer Driver to the DVD Drivers?  If so, I already deleted the DVD Drive entry in the Device Manager and let it auto-detect and install after a reboot.  Unfortunately that didn't work either.  =\

I actually don't have any drivers to manually load for the beast.  When the laptop was running Vista it was also using the Microsoft provided driver.  I can't see anywhere on the HP driver page (see several posts back)  anything listed relating to the drive either.

remove the upper and lower filters or just the lower filter if the upper filter is not there, remove any discs from the drive.
Press Win+R brings up the run  and type regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Locate the entry {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the right side, locate the entry UpperFilters and delete it
locate the entry LowerFilters and delete that as well
Close regedit
Restart
Any burning software  installed such as Nero / Light scribe etc  will require being re-installed.

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-28 at 16:13:25ID: 25212224

Thanx for trying Merete.

I deleted the UpperFilters entry but didn't have a LowerFilters entry.  Rebooted and the symptoms still persist.

Trying to navigate to the drive in Windows Explorer causes it to eject and WMP has a grayed out Play --> DVD menu entry.

Well it's possible this is a bug with W7 x64 bit is still in the testing phaze and must come down to drivers.
Some rom drives are not compatible with the x64 bit.
In order toplay DVD you require the mpeg plugin. If no codecs or VLC will play it then it has to come down to the drive itself.
Is this a sata or ide connected rom drive? May not be relevent as you can play data CD/DVD discs
Windows 7 comes with DirectX 11
what brand is this rom drive?
is it bundled with this system OEM or did you buy it with any software included?
You mention litescribe have you tried opening it in litescribe software?
Try the dxdiag tool
not sure where this is in x64 but go  start then open search type in  dxdiag
or
Press WINKEY+R to bring up the Run dialog.
Type  dxdiag.exe and press OK.

test your WMP video playback without rom
click to play

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-28 at 20:43:13ID: 25212925

dxdiag reported no problems.

The drive did play DVDs while it had Vista on it with all the OEM software...just not since the clean install of Win 7.

My wife's laptop also has a clean install of Win 7 and it does play the DVDs so I think it's just a matter of finding and/or waiting for an updated driver.  =\

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-28 at 20:43:55ID: 25212927

*oh, the screen shot is the LightScribe software...it doesn't really do anything.

There is two ways to upgrade to W7 Idle_Mind
via the upgrade path using your manufacture example HP has a kit you can download to prepare your system from Vista to W7 and the upgrade path is free if your system is new

What is your wife's laptop Idle_Mind
HP - DEL and what OS was on before?
The point is the mainboard drivers..

by: RichardBatemanPosted on 2009-08-29 at 02:46:41ID: 25213514

To me it really sounds like a region encoding issue. Which region is your DVD drive set to- for example in the UK it must be set to region 2 to work with UK/Europe DVDs and region 1 is America. Also as merete pointed out Windows 7 is in the testing phase- I have the RTM version and even that is a little iffy... To check the region encoding settings go into the properties section for the drive and click the region tab. If you do not know which region you should be in then google is your friend. Let me know how you get on please.

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-29 at 09:18:03ID: 25214449

@RichardBateman: My Region is set to 1 as it should be.  Thanks.

@Merete: I can't use the HP Upgrade path as I bought this system in 2008 (prior to the eligibility window).  Besides, I don't really want an Upgrade, I want a CLEAN Install...which is what I currently have.  It's great not having all that extra crap on my system.  ;)

I installed the Win 7 Pro RTM version via my MSDN/TechNet subscription which provides the ISO for the DVD.  This part worked great...and I don't plan on downgrading back to Vista with the Laptop OEM discs just to get DVD Movie playback.

My wife has a Toshiba Satelite M-105/S3004 Laptop that had 32-bit Win XP Media Center Edition on it.  Again, though, I did a CLEAN install (with a Format!) on her system so ALL drivers for her system (as well as mine) have come from the Win 7 DVD and/or have been downloaded by the Automatic Windows Update features.  Her system DOES play DVD Movies correctly though.  Also, it does NOT have any third party DVD software on it.

So both systems are clean installs, one with 32-bit and the other with 64-bit, but hers works and mine doesn't.

Since the various free players and Codec packs haven't helped my system...it sounds like I just need to wait for HP and/or Microsoft to release an updated Driver for my DVD Drive to work with 64-bit Win 7.

It's not that big a deal, I just wanted to tap the Expert knowledgebase and see if there was a quick fix I was missing...  =)

Thoughts?...or other things I should try?

by: grayePosted on 2009-08-29 at 11:10:01ID: 25214796

I was mentioning the firmware update since I noticed that Dell had released a bunch of firmware updates for their CD/DVD products that specifically stated that it was for Win7 compatibility.   They didn't go into any detail... so I'm just guessing that it might be the same scenario with your HP

BTW:  It's kinda odd to see you on "this side" of a question!

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-29 at 11:32:35ID: 25214875

Hehe...I can usually figure things out by myself with the power of Google and EE...  =)

So there is entry on the HP page (for my Laptop) under "BIOS - System ROM" called "WinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS":
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2100&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3795415&lang=en
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-71726-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3795415&os=2100&lang=en

It was released in June 2009 and says this in the "Enhancements" section:

"Adds support for future Microsoft Windows Operating Systems."

But when I ran it, the silly thing said "This BIOS is not for your Laptop"...

by: MeretePosted on 2009-08-29 at 17:39:39ID: 25215950

Even so  Idle_Mind, the upgrade path is probably more reliable even though you have mised the free upgrade path.
This way you get the setup disc with right HP mainboard drivers / especially if they are sata
Also did you upgrade from Vista home to W7 home  ie Vista Ultimate to W7 ultimate?

I'd say it has to do with the previous Vista mainboard drivers
XP drivers were different from Vista drivers in that you can't use Vista drivers with XP or you had to run in compatible mode xp drivers for Vista/
and W7 drivers are newer than the Vista .
There seems to be a sequence to installing drivers since XP upgraded to Vista
As you maybe aware there was a huge outcry with Vista and drivers not being available or would not function with hardware from XP based systems.
In order to install windows 7 I'd go back to your HP Vista setup disc and explore it for the HP Vista mainboard drivers.
Run a repair re-install and then have the sata or raid drivers ready ready.

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-29 at 18:11:50ID: 25216008

I went from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional...but this was a CLEAN install (with a format) so I don't think it matters.  Nothing from the old system is carried over in that case right?

I can't explore the OEM HP Discs as they are the "imaging" type where they simply install everything at once...thus you can't pick anything off of them.

I'll see if I can find any drivers relating to SATA for the system....

"get a hold of this version of Cyberlink DVD Suite Premium  that came with your old Vista 64"

I think that would probably work...unfortunately you can't download that from the website and the OEM discs are not the type that allow you to install a specific piece of software.  =\

"Can you mount this image in daemon tools"

Can I mount what?...lol...and will my wife be upset?  Seriously, though, what should I be doing with this tool?

by: MeretePosted on 2009-08-29 at 22:38:00ID: 25216459

Lol oh gosh I never implied that all. :O
Daemon tools is a virtual drive,  that supports ISO, bin, cue,iso image
if you can explore this imaged disc by mounting it in the virtual tool may help you to get the installers out for PDVD.
Once you have the virtual drive 1 ready possibly D; or E: r/clcik DTools then  virtual drive mount image   navigate to your Vista set up disc drive letter, this will put that image into the virtual drive hopefully
then go over to my computer open the new virtual drive by exploring it and find whatever drivers you need or copy the whole lot out is probably better.

Woohoo!...so I downloaded and installed "GOM Media Player":
http://download.cnet.com/GOM-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10551786.html

...and now I can play DVDs in the GOM player AND in Windows Media Player.  =)

I was really surprised since the more popular VLC and various "codec packs" did not work.

I did notice that in the GOM Player I can't select the DVD Menus with the Mouse but I can with the Keyboard...and it doesn't properly show the currently selected Menu Item.

No matter, though, since I can now watch the move (and select the menus w/ the mouse) in Windows Media Player.

by: MeretePosted on 2009-08-30 at 00:08:06ID: 25216604

ahaha looks like a good movie, what is it?
Gom player is like a divx player isnt it lol  I have all of them and forget which does what.
But yeah players give the codecs these days.
I'm working on this too

The movie is "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog":

Great stuff by Joss Whedon! (Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Angel / Firefly / Serenity / Dollhouse)

Yeah, GOM plays all kinds of files:

"Supported formats include DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF, AVI, and MOV, as are common codecs like FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, and H263."

So was the regeon coding wrong?
You accepted that as the solution?

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-30 at 20:05:44ID: 25220364

The region coding was fine...  =)

The solution was in my comments.  I split points between all participants so someone has to have the "Accepted Answer" while the others get the "Assist".

As stated, no solution proposed by the participants actually fixed my problem.  I installed GOM Player and it was magically fixed...
(I had previously tried several other common free players and codec packs without success)

by: Idle_MindPosted on 2009-08-31 at 03:21:11ID: 31620950

Problem went away after installing GOM Player (despite having previously installed other free players/codec packs).  WMP now also works correctly.

@Vee_Mod...it wouldn't let me assign points to you bud cuz you posted as an Admin...thanx for helping out though!  =O

@Everyone Else...Thanks for helping me troubleshoot!  =)
