Question

Windows 7 "no internet access" notification icon

Asked by: rgc6789

I have a weird issue. I loaded Windows 7 RTM on two of my laptops over the weekend. Since then, the wireless network notification icon says "no internet access, however both laptops have Internet access. I've done some searching but I haven't found anything. One is Ultimate and one is Professional. Any ideas?

The best work around I've found is to open the Network and Sharing Center, select Change Adapter Settings, right click on the connection you want to use (local area (wired) or Wireless) and disable the connection then renable the connection. A lot of search results seem to stop there but I found this doesn't always work so I go back to the Network Sharing Center and click on the Red X in the network map (indicating no Internet Access) which launches a trouble shooting wizard by the time the first step of the wizrd completes the Red X in the map is gone and internet access is esgtablished so I don't have to go through the brain dead remainder of the wizard that will ask me if I want to look for a solution on line.  (Let's see, I have a problem with obtaining an Internet connection and the wizard wants to know if I'd like to look for a solution on the Internet, sure that makes sense)

Do you have any firewall virus scanner installed?

by: rgc6789Posted on 2009-08-28 at 09:53:51ID: 25209519

1stITMAN: I've tried both and they haven't worked.

The funny thing is that I am a consultant and I connect to 4 different networks. On none of my clients do I have an issue - both wired and wireless. However, at home I run SBS 2008, which seems to be the only network I have this issue on. (I just noticed this yesterday and today as I've been connected to 2 of those networks). Of course, I don't connect to the domains at either location - just to the network. I wonder if it has something to do with the domain?

Oh, I found your suggestions doing some research, but they all seem to deal with actually not having Internet Access. I have it, but the notification icon says I don't. It doesn't really affect anything, but it bothers me!

Most probably do you use a proxy of some sort, It just be the network management software in Windows 7 does not seem find the correct route to go out to the Internet..

by: rgc6789Posted on 2009-08-28 at 16:38:30ID: 25212385

No proxy. My DNS is handled by the SBS 2008 server. And then I have a Linksys router as my Gateway. I didn't have this problem until I upgraded. Like I said, I do have Internet Access, so it isn't a "problem" per se. If I find anything I'll let you know. I wonder if a fresh install has the same issue? I have a third laptop that I can check...

New install has same notification as the upgrades do. No other answers that I can find.

by: 1stITMANPosted on 2009-09-01 at 15:47:58ID: 25236925

I think this is just a cosmetic issue with Windows 7 for the moment. ;)

by: rgc6789Posted on 2009-09-01 at 15:49:07ID: 25236931

I think so too.

I think I found the problem. All my computers are using AVG, but I changed my personal laptop to test Microsoft's new Microsoft Security Essentials and guess what - the notification icon went away.

I'm also having this same issue, but only with a Windows 2008 R2 machine.  I got the "no internet access" to go away once by launching the troubleshooting wizard for connecting to the internet where it actually attempts to load a web URL.  Since rebooting the issue returned and cannot fix with that same wizard.

I'm not using any firewall software at all (just Symantec Corp Antivirus, which all my systems use).

It looks like there's just some sort of bug here.

I am having a similar issue. I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. I have a vpn client called NCP Secure Entry client and I think it has something to do with that when I am connected via vpn. It is an annoying bubble that won't go away for me in the bottom right hand corner.
