I can't quite tell from your pic, but it seems to me that they are sorted by name by grouping.
In other words, Files first, Shortcuts second and so on by whatever other system is invoked there.
Will check it out in win7 when I get on it.

by: routinetPosted on 2009-09-27 at 14:24:46ID: 25435551

Well, I already figured out that the first group is system built-ins, the second group is "All User", and the third group is user-specific.  I'm not sure I can work around it.  If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

From where are you getting that list? Start menu?

by: routinetPosted on 2009-09-27 at 14:56:26ID: 25435672

It is the "Desktop" toolbar on the taskbar.

I don't mind the built-ins appearing first, but I do with the others would maintain alphabetical order.  The only fix I see right now is to move them in all in one folder, but that is not an ideal solution.

They most likely will sort the same way as it's been the case in windows.
You could put them in the Quick Launch and sort any way you want  or
maybe use a jumplist.
Here's a freebie I've been wanting to try but haven't yet.
Still trying to get all the rest down first.

Still here...

I think I've identified the problem, but I have not yet had a chance to play with the jumplist solution.  It may be that "can't be done" is the answer I'm looking for...

Sorry... Been out trying to make a living :-)
Haven't had a chance to get on win7 but will next day or so and get back.

Ok. Took time for a quick peek. Correct me if wrong.
You created a desktop toolbar as part of the taskbar much like the old quick launch.
It sorts about the same way. Click and drag the item where you want it.
That's fine for the quick launch but your desktop items keep changing and if you
work anything like me, so not a good solution.
There seems to be much discord about loss of functionality on sorting folders in win7
This may be another.
My guess at this point is that some third party will pick up on it but for now.............
No good news I can see.

I don't think I created it so much as enabled it being there, but you're in the right place.  Like you said, I can manually drag things around, but that's not an adequate solution.  I guess I'll have to either list with it, or create another toolbar that mimics my desktop inventory..  :/

I know where you're coming from. I really miss the option of docking any folder to the side of screen.
That's really a production minus for me when I need it.
I guess there weren't enough of us around to use those features especially the docking of MyComputer
to the top of the screen like the taskbar at the bottom. Quick access to all the drives.
All I can say that long before xp there was a program around that allowed me to do something
similar and I would expect that there will be one for this also.
There's actually quite a few utilities out already for win7 to make up for some of the shortcomings.
Overall I like the OS so far and may be another xp. Time will tell.
Good luck to you.

Hello routinet
As you may have noticed, I'm an infrequent participant in EE and I forget or am not aware
of most of the changes that take place in the forum.
Anyway, decided to check you profile to see whom I was dealing with ( most pprofiles, like mine have no info) and I must say that
your phrase of ...there are a lot of stupid people in the world.  Knowledge and intelligence are not the same thing....   is a gem. I must remember that always.
Cheers
