If you perform and in-place upgrade installation, most of your applications will be saved - including their settings and data files. Microsoft Office will retain its settings and PST files if you upgrade to Windows 7. Most likely Outlook Express / Windows Mail will too, but I'm not positive about that.
Clean installation will wipe out your apps and settings though. You would definitely want to back up your data in this case.

.PST is a an Outlook file, so unless you also install an equal or newer version of Outlook, you cannot use the .PST file so far as I know. Otherwise you can transfer the other data files, but you have to reinstall programs. ... Thinkpads_User
