I just upgrading from XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro (not beta, actual release) and have run all updates, even driver updates for my network card - but every couple of minutes my internet seems to reset, disconnecting me from IRC, FTP, etc. and then comes back pretty instantly. I looked up some solutions and ended up disabling power saving turn-off features that were automatically enabled on my network adapters (through Device Manager) but it still happens. Could anyone offer some suggestions? The little task bar indicator never shows that the internet is disconnected... If it helps at all, I am using ESET Smart Security 4 64bit and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

My understanding is that there is not a direct 'upgrade' from XP to Windows 7.
Where did you get the instructions for this install?
Also - was your XP 32 or 64 Bit?

To tell you the truth, I don't spend much time at all trouble-shooting built-in NIC's. It is so simple (and cheap) to throw in a spare that it isn't worth my time.
One of the things to keep in mind is that historically the Windows 64 Bit OS's have had numerous driver problems.
I notice that you have this in the "Windows NT Networking" Zone (the old Windows 4.0).
You should click on the "Request Attention" link in your original post and ask the Moderators to remove that and add the "Hardware" Zone. They can put your question in up to 5 Zones - to maximize the exposure to a wider variety of Experts.

I agree with younghv in that troubleshooting onboard NICs is generally a waste of time. However, if you are so inclined, here's what you'd want to check: physical connection on both ends, warnings in device manager, the router/modem it's connected to, and finally, search around for problems with the specific NIC you have. Also, are you running a bittorrent client? These tend to make huge amounts of connections, which flood the modem/router and cause the internet to come down. I've seen both cable modems and routers crash due to this.

Updating drivers is always the first recommendation most Experts would offer, but you said in your original comment that you had already done that.

If you want to verify a compatible NIC and then test that in your system, it will probably be the fastest solution for you.

I'm also having the same problem. Win 7 seems to pour a lot of traffic onto the router compared to Vista. I have a Dlink G604T+ router with Win 7. Also sharing the router connection to cloud are a laptop running XP, a couple of smartphones and an xbox which occasionally streams content from shared folders on the Windows 7 box.
The problem seems to occur when there's heavy traffic on the network. The router overheats and crashes. Power cycling fixes it temporarily. This never happened with Vista, even with a higher level of network traffic.
I have seen a bunch of forum posts regarding this same issue with Win 7. Many echo the same circumstances including routers overheating, shared folders and power-cycling. I suspect Win 7 chews up all router resources and the router can't handle the strain. It doesn't seem to be a NIC issue at all, or anything specifically wrong with the router. It seems to be the way Win 7 talks to the router (or in some cases, modem/router).
The only fix I have found until Win 7 fixes the network traffic issue is to put the router on a cooling bed or secure a super-strong fan to it to stop it from overheating although neither of these really fixes the problem. They're just work-arounds until we can figure out what Win 7 is doing.
