Question

Run .VHD in Windows 7 Ultimate

Asked by: Moncapitaan

I have Windows 7 Ultimate.  I also have Acronis True Image 2010.

I have made a backup of my old XP machine with Acronis and converted the backup to VHD format.

Can I run this VHD inside Windows 7 with Virtual PC.

NOTE:

1. I do not want to know how to BOOT from the VHD, I know how to do that.
2. I dont want to just "mount" the VHD to access files, I know how to do that.

I have a dual monitor setup and want to boot into Windows 7 then I want to run my XP backup vhd in Virtual pc.
The plan is to have Windows 7 on one monitor and my old XP on the other.

Is this possible?

Thanks

Sure.

Just import the .vhd file into the Virtual PC console.

File \ New Virtual Machine Wizard \ Add an existing virtual machine \

According to this Virtual PC does support VHD file formats.

Why not use Virtualbox?

I'm afraid you can't.   Windows 7's backup tool creates VHD files, but this VHD file is not the same as that used by Windows Virtual PC.   See this page, and note at the bottom of this quotation:

http://kb.acronis.com/content/3499

Introduction
Acronis True Image 2010 backup (TIB) files can be converted to Windows backup VHD files. There are several reasons why Acronis recommends doing this:

You can boot your machine from the converted VHD file to test if it is not corrupt and works fine;
You can boot from the converted VHD for testing purposes. For example, to install a new application and see if it runs fine;
You can keep the converted VHD file for emergency situations. For example, if your machine crashes and you need to get it up and running in no time, you can just boot from the VHD file.
In Windows 7, the VHD file can be mounted as an additional drive.
(!) If you are going to boot from the converted VHD file, there should either Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise Edition in the file.

(!) If you are going to mount the VHD file in Windows 7, there can be non-system Windows partitions.

(!) Any changes you make to the booted or mounted VHD file are saved to it. If you boot from the VHD file and make changes to the data that was not backed up (e.g. delete a file from drive that was not backed up), these changes will affect your live system.

(!) File backup (as opposed to partition backup) cannot be converted to VHD.

(!) You can only boot the same machine the backup of which was converted to VHD. Booting other machines from the same VHD files will fail.

(!) You cannot run the converted VHD file as a virtual machine.

Hi Lee,

Thanks for that.

I am very disapointed now.  Before I purchased Win7Ultimate and Acronis 2010 I had a live chat session with Acronis to ask if this was possible.
The assistant went away to check and came back and said yes it can.

The only reason I purchases Win7U instead of Pro was for this purpose!!

Grrrr

Should I complain to Acronis?? Do you think now I have put this questions "out there" some clever bod will find a way to do it!!

This is why I love this site, I learn so much. Had no idea there was two different types of VHD file formats in use.

I think you ought to get in touch with Acronis, maybe search their knowledge base or their users forum.  It seems to me that I saw an article in my search the other day about it working with the Acronis tool for use on Linux rather than Windows; I can't track it down now...

I spoke to Acronis and they said there is a power pack coming next month that will fix this issue. :-)

Fine by me.  Glad to see the issue has made progress in the right direction.
