Question

What is the best program or method for automatically synchronizing files and folders between two computers (my laptop and my desktop)?

Asked by: TechSupportExpert

What is the best program or method for automatically synchronizing files and folders between two computers (my laptop and my desktop)?

Windows has several ways of doing this, such as the Windows Briefcase and even possible Offline File Synchronization, but I am looking for a better and more efficient method than what's included with Windows.

I need to be able to do this between two Windows client operating systems (e.g. Windows 7, Windows XP, or Windows Vista) and am not going to (or will be able to) implement a synchronization process involving a server.

What are the best programs for doing this?

I have used Vice Versa by tgrmn.com before for this purpose. It has a nice graphical interface and several different copy/synchronization options available. You can also set this on a schedule so that you dont have to manually run it. The program needs to be purchased but the pricing is very reasonable.

I *love* syncback.  And it's free.  And you can set it to run on schedule automatically.  And it's infinitely configurable, while being easy to use.

Another vote for SyncBack. The free version is excellent. I have the paid version but I only paid because I thought it was worthwhile - didn't need the extra functions.

However!

I now use Evernote for most of my data files - images, pdf files - anything which needs to be instantly searchable and I complement that with DropBox which is excellent for Word and Excel files and the like.

My experience with Evernote:

DropBox

Both of those programs are free but they work in different ways which makes one more useful  than the other depending on the types of data and whether or not you're regularly updating those data. They synch your local files with an online database and when you switch from one computer to another they're immediately and automatically updated. you can also access your files online from any computer on the planet.

Evernote is PC and Mac compatible. DropBox is PC, Mac and Linux compatible.

By using these two programs I only need to sycnchonise my two machines using Syncback for music files, Outlook database, program downloads and suchlike that aren't suited for Evernote of DropBox.

The best program is the "GoodSync" from Siber systems:

+1 for Syncback, though there is a small learning curve to make sure that youre files are not deleted or returened when you delete them.

After you set up your backups in Syncback, you can run a "simulation" and it will tell you what it will do, before running it for real.  Even if you think you're REALLY smart, that's a good thing to do.

Use the latest Mircrosoft Live Mesh. Excellent software though in initial stage.
