Question

Outlook 2002 - Windows 7 - Not retaining passwords for email accounts

Asked by: Tangent

I was pleased that my old Office XP Professional 2002 loaded ok onto Windows 7. It seemed all I needed was something called Microsoft Agent and it all worked fine. Was able to directly import my pst file with no need for all the various forms of back ups I'd made as a precaution before reformatting the machine.

All is well but one thing.
Outlook just won't hold the passwords for my 5 email accounts. I am now so fed up with having to keep entering them every time.

Mailwasher is holding them with no problems

I have created a new Profile and re-imported the pst file but the problem persisted

I have also followed online advice to go into the registry and find the HKEY_CURRENT-USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider.
I selected the 'Reset Permissions for all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions" box. I then deleted the user subkey folder.

Still the password will not stay put!

Any other ideas?

Outlook xp is not compatible to vista or Win7 when it comes to saving passwords - that's official, see the site of an MVP here http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/vista.htm together with a workaround - OLAutoPW

Thanks for your help there McKnife
I downloaded OLAutoPW but have not paid for it yet. It does get round the problem but this whole experience has left me feeling it's time to move on.

I have a quad core processor and a terabyte of hard drive and 4Gb of RAM (which I'm about to upgrade to 8 now that it can be recognised on the 64-bit system). Although this machine isn't 2 years old yet I had XP Professional on it due to all the problems people were having with Vista. I am enjoying Windows 7 now and the only reason I haven't already gone for Office 2007 was because of all the complaints I'd heard about useful processes being taken out.

It's such a job trying to keep up with all the changes and as I have a pretty good system with a 24" monitor and a connection to my excellent Genie 5.1 Surround sound system and now Windows 7 I think perhaps I should move on with my Office suite so that everything integrates as it should.

I would appreciate your views on this both on my particular situation and any views you have about the Office 2007 suite. I am just downloading the trial version now.

Oh and also if anyone has heard of softatlantic.com
The deals seem too good to be true so a bit reluctant to order from them
They have Office 2007 Ultimate for under £100!

They are a rip off company sending pirate copies out.
Can't afford to run to £300 at the moment so will register OLAutoPW for now.
Thanks again McKnife for your first rate help.

I don't know how long it would have taken me to get there as I'd already done some very intensive searching. Thank you so much.
