Question

Disabling Windows 7 Fast user switch via GPO

Asked by: Comptx

Hello, Im running a server 2003 AD DC and now we have some of the clients which are Windows 7 Professional. The regular GPOs work well on windows 7, but i cannot find a way to disable the fast user switch on windows 7. On windows XP pro its automatically diabled when on a domain but apparently not on Windows 7. I saw a way to do it locally, but that is a lot of work having many clients. If anyone knows a way to disable this thru the GPO it would be very helpful.  Thanks.

Look under Computer Configuration -> System ->Logon "Hide Entry Points for Fast User Switching"

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-11-04 at 11:28:37ID: 25742924

If it can be done via registry (HideFastUserSwitching) then it can be done via GPO. In Windows 2003 you should create own ADM file, add it and new option will appear in your GPO management.

Do you need more help with creating ADM file for your settings?

I am using a Windows 2008 R2 server to manage, so it loads the ADM into 2003. You can do the same thing using Vista or Win 7 to manage if you have gpmc installed. Our DCS are 2003.

by: tgerbertPosted on 2009-11-04 at 11:46:56ID: 25743123

...I believe you can also download the ADMX from http://download.microsoft.com/.

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-11-04 at 11:47:43ID: 25743134

And what do you plan to do with ADMX on 2003 DC???

by: CAGdorfPosted on 2009-11-04 at 11:49:50ID: 25743156

it handles it all behind the scenes, modifying the GPO. That's been my experience. I have been using it since Vista was in RC to set policies on our Vista machines. Now I am having to set different policies for w7.

Open them in Notepad, take a screenshot and use the resulting image as a desktop background.

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-11-04 at 11:56:04ID: 25743228

Nice idea... because Windows 2003 doesn't support ADMX format.
Even on 2008 ADMX is not enough because you need paired ADML file.

Well, the changes that you guys are telling me "Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Logon -> Hide Entry Points for Fast User Switching" that is availiable on the local PC but not the server's domain GPO. but what i want is a way to do it over GPO, so i dont have to do it on each indidual PC...

attached is a picture of what i see on the GPO in the server.

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-11-04 at 12:06:04ID: 25743350

So as I wrote before you may add this option to your GPO with simple ADM file.
If you need some help with creating such file - just tell.

@gtworek
Yeah, I'm a little slow today - or rather, too fast, I might have missed a detail or two. ;)

by: ComptxPosted on 2009-11-04 at 12:07:33ID: 25743362

qt, please do.

by: CAGdorfPosted on 2009-11-04 at 12:13:06ID: 25743423

comptx, try using gpmc on the Windows 7 box to manage your group policy  for the domain.

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-11-04 at 12:17:06ID: 25743461

You should create file with:

CLASS MACHINE
CATEGORY "Custom policies"
POLICY "Windows 7 Fast User Switching"
KEYNAME "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System"
VALUENAME "HideFastUserSwitching "
VALUEON NUMERIC 1
VALUEOFF NUMERIC 0
END POLICY
END CATEGORY

save it with ADM file extension (not TXT!) in your DC's %SystemRoot%\Inf folder then add your new template to your GPO.
You can find some useful info at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/225087 and http://thelazyadmin.com/blogs/thelazyadmin/archive/2005/07/05/Creating-Custom-ADM-Templates.aspx and some other places...

by: ComptxPosted on 2009-11-04 at 12:17:19ID: 25743465

Isnt it only for the local one? i dont see a way to load the one from my domain in there.

by: ComptxPosted on 2009-11-04 at 12:41:16ID: 25743665

When im adding the custom adm file i get the following error.

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-11-04 at 12:52:28ID: 25743773

Do you have "CATEGORY" keyword in your file? The error message is about typo in this word...

by: ComptxPosted on 2009-11-04 at 12:53:57ID: 25743791

I copy/pasted what you posted into the file

by: ComptxPosted on 2009-11-04 at 12:56:30ID: 25743820

from the file:

CLASS MACHINE
CATEGORY "Custom policies"
POLICY "Windows 7 Fast User Switching"
KEYNAME "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System"
VALUENAME "HideFastUserSwitching "
VALUEON NUMERIC 1
VALUEOFF NUMERIC 0
END POLICY
END CATEGORY

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-11-04 at 13:03:57ID: 25743905

I do not why there is CATEGOR when you pasting CATEGORY.... It's strange...
You may also try just write manually entire content. It's quite short. BTW after the HideFastUserSwitching wort there is no space before quotation mark... Let's try again in another format. Try to copy&paste again.

CLASS MACHINE
CATEGORY "Custom policies"
POLICY "Windows 7 Fast User Switching"
KEYNAME "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System"
VALUENAME "HideFastUserSwitching"
VALUEON NUMERIC 1
VALUEOFF NUMERIC 0
END POLICY
END CATEGORY
