Thanks Ituser. What exactly does this do? is it just a spyware/malware removal tool?

Browse All TopicsRunning release version of Windows 7 Professional fully activated on about 8 machines for testing. Two units are desktops (Dell Optiplex 760 and an Lenovo Thinkcenter. Other four include 2 Dell D630, 1 Dell D830, 1 Dell E6400, and 2 IBM T61's.
Periodically so far on 3 of the units, a Windows pop-up window appears reading:
"A critical error has occurred and Windows will automatically restart in xx minutes. Save any current work..." I have disabled the "Automatic Restart" check box under advanced Computer Properties; yet the system still restarts.
There are no unidentified drivers I experience no specific issues.
This is happening on a 2 units that were upgrades from Vista and 1 unit that was a clean install.
Any thoughts on how to truly disable the restart feature would be helpful. I will troubleshoot from the logs, but do not want the system to restart.
Thanks in advance.

Hi.
The checkbox you mention is something different, it tells you computer not to restart automatically AFTER a bluescreen.
You should start with finding out what critical system service is failing, because this will be the problem most probably. So before the restart, open up services.msc and sort by status to find which service should be running (type automatic) but isn't anymore.
Thanks McKnife. Will check into the services. I assume this will tell me if a particular service is no longer running, but not necessarily reveal the issue or event which generated the critical error.
I was able to check the Event viewer after the last even and it mentioned an issue related to Power. Not sure if this implies a brownout. Will try isolating this to see if there might be a problem, but would still like to disable the automatic restart if possible. I would like to know of the event, but would like to control whether the system automatically restarts or not.
Thanks
It looks like the issue or issues are related to the drivers for the Dell Wireless card which is installed. From what I can tell and have read based on the suggestion to focus on Event Logs, either the driver or device itself seem to be generating the error. This is consistent with the fact that it happens on a laptop and desktop unit (both dell with wireless devices installed), but not on the IBM laptop units.
Thanks all for pointing me in the correct direction.
